UNRWA’s education system perpetuates hatred and violence. It’s time to redirect aid through neutral channels.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) was established in 1949 to provide assistance to Palestinian refugees. However, over the years, it has faced significant criticism for perpetuating anti-Israel sentiment and fostering environments that incite violence. Recent reports have highlighted that educational materials used in UNRWA schools glorify violence and promote hatred, raising concerns about the agency’s role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Investigations have revealed that some UNRWA educators have direct affiliations with extremist groups. A report by IMPACT-se found that over 10% of UNRWA principals and senior education staff in Gaza are affiliated with Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad. These affiliations compromise the agency’s neutrality and contribute to the indoctrination of young minds with extremist ideologies.
The presence of such individuals within UNRWA’s educational system raises serious questions about the content being taught to Palestinian children. Educational materials have been found to erase Israel’s existence from maps and glorify martyrdom, effectively teaching children to hate and even glorify violence against Israelis.
The Simon Wiesenthal Center has long advocated for the redirection of humanitarian aid to Palestinians through channels free from violent incitement. There are multiple UN agencies and other NGOs capable of addressing the social, medical, and educational needs of the Palestinian people without promoting hatred or violence. Redirecting funds to these vetted agencies would ensure that aid reaches those in need without perpetuating cycles of terrorism and war.
The international community must acknowledge UNRWA’s role in perpetuating conflict through its educational system and take decisive action. By closing UNRWA and redirecting aid through neutral channels, we can help break the cycle of hatred and violence, paving the way for a more peaceful future for both Palestinians and Israelis.
Join us in urging the international community to end UNRWA’s incitement and support peaceful education for Palestinian children. Contact your government representatives to advocate for the redirection of aid through neutral channels. Together, we can promote a future of peace and mutual respect in the region.
