“Invoke Anti-Discrimination Law in Antisemitic Assault Against
Prominent Argentine Jewish Leader”
In a letter to the Argentine Minister of Justice, Security and Human Rights, Aníbal Fernández, Dr. Shimon Samuels(Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center) and Sergio Widder (the Center’s Latin American Representative) stated that “in recent Argentine history, radical group attacks onArgentine Jewish citizens were related to the Middle East situation in the terrorist atrocities against the Israeli Embassy (1992) and the AMIA (1994) in Buenos Aires”.
“Though not an act of terrorism this threatening behavior is a precursor unacceptable any democracy. Today, the pretext isthe Gaza Strip, tomorrow an excuse based on any other imported conflict. We acknowledge the commitment of the Argentine government in the fight against antisemitism and the Declaration againstAntisemitism recently signed by President Cristina Kirchner. It is now time to invoke it”, urged Samuels.
“Those who gathered in front of the Elsztain’s company headquarters are heirs of the black shirts. They callthemselves socialists but are a fascist antisemitic gang. We urge the government to promote the initiatives according to the Argentine legislation, to prosecute those who support, incite andpractice such racist violence”, added Widder.
The Wiesenthal Center also expressed its solidarity to Eduardo Elsztain.

El Centro Wiesenthal urge al gobierno argentino a que promueva la aplicación de la ley antidiscriminatoria contraacciones de violencia antisemita
El Centro Simon Wiesenthal repudió el “escrache” organizado el lunes 26/01/09 por algunas agrupaciones de piqueteros y deizquierda radicalizada contra las oficinas del empresario Eduardo Elsztain, debido a su condición judía, con el propósito alegado de “bloquear a los bloqueadores”.
En una carta al Ministro de Justicia, Seguridad y Derechos Humanos, Cdr. Aníbal Fernández, el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Directorde Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Simon Wiesenthal) y Sergio Widder (Representante para América Latina del Centro) señalaron que “la historia argentina reciente no registra antecedentes deeste tipo de prácticas consistentes en atacar a un ciudadano argentino judío alegando como motivación los sucesos de Medio Oriente, a excepción de los grupos locales que pudieron haber colaboradoen los ataques terroristas contra la Embajada de Israel (1992) y la AMIA (1994)”.
“Si bien no se trata ahora de un acto terrorista, estas conductas amenazantes son un precedente intolerable en cualquierdemocracia. Hoy el pretexto es lo que acontece en la Franja de Gaza, y mañana puede ser cualquier otra excusa sobre la base de otro conflicto importado. Reconocemos el compromiso del gobiernoargentino en la lucha contra el antisemitismo, y valoramos especialmente la Declaración contra el Antisemitismo que la Sra. Presidenta Cristina Fernández de Kirchner firmó semanas atrás. Ahora esmomento de invocarla”, urgió Samuels.
“Quienes llevaron adelante la marcha frente a las oficinas de IRSA son herederos de los grupos de camisas pardas. Seauto-proclamen de izquierda y son una patota antisemita fascista. Urgimos al gobierno a que promueva las iniciativas que correspondan en el marco de la legislación argentina, y particularmente dela Ley Antidiscriminatoria, para que quienes favorecen, incitan y practican esta violencia racista sean castigados”, agregó Widder.
