President of the Argentine Football Association Agrees to Bring SWC’s Petition In Front Of FIFA’s Executive Committee

PRESIDENT OF THE ARGENTINE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION AGREES TO BRING SWC’S PETITION IN FRONT OF FIFA’S EXECUTIVECOMMITTEE

The President of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), Julio Grondona, agreed to transmit to FIFA’s Executive Committee(which will meet on June 3, 2006), the Wiesenthal Center’s petition to bar Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad from attending the World Cup next month in Germany. During a telephoneconversation with Sergio Widder (Latin American Representative of the SWC), Grondona, who is the Vice-President of FIFA’s Executive Committee, indicated that he would present the Center’spetition in front of that body.

While the AFA said it supports FIFA’s position on this controversy (FIFA asserts that the question of Ahmadneijad's possibleattendance is the exclusive domain of the German government), Grondona was receptive to the request that FIFA declare Ahmadinejad's presence at the World Cup unwelcome. “It is a barbarism that apresident of one country can propose that another country should be wiped off the map,” said Grondona.

EL PRESIDENTE DE LA ASOCIACIÓN DEL FÚTBOL ARGENTINO ACCEDIÓ A PRESENTAR EN EL COMITÉ EJECUTIVO DE FIFA UNA PETICIÓN DELCENTRO WIESENTHAL

El Presidente de la Asociación del Fútbol Argentino (AFA), Julio Grondona, accedió a transmitir ante el Comité Ejecutivo deFIFA, que se reunirá el 3 de junio de 2006, la petición del Centro Simon Wiesenthal para impedir la presencia del presidente de Irán, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad durante la edición de la Copa del Mundoque se iniciará el 9 de junio próximo en Alemania. Durante una conversación telefónica con Sergio Widder (Representante para América Latina del Centro Wiesenthal), Grondona, quien esVicepresidente del Comité Ejecutivo deAFA, indicó que comunicaría ante dicho ente la solicitud del Centro.

Si bien la AFA había manifestado, a través de una carta al Centro Wiesenthal, que se sumaba a la posición de la FIFA acerca deeste tema (FIFA hizo saber que no es una organización política y que cualquier determinación sobre la presencia de Ahmadinejad en la Copa del Mundo debería ser responsabilidad del gobiernoalemán), Grondona se mostró receptivo cuando se le solicitó que se evaluara la posibilidad de que la FIFA declarara que la presencia de Ahmadinejad en la Copa del Mundo no sería bienvenida. “Esuna barbaridad que un presidente país proponga borrar del mapa a otro país”, dijo Grondona.
