| SUSPECTS RELEASED BY INDIFFERENT POLICE;WIESENTHAL CENTERDEMANDS ACTION AFTER LATEST ANTISEMITIC VANDALISM IN ARGENTINA The Simon Wiesenthal Center protested to Buenos Aires Province Governor, Felipe Sola, expressing its outrage forthe recent antisemitic attack against the Ramos Mejia Jewish Community Center, where a huge swastika was painted at the entrance. "In addition to the attack, we condemn the shameful attitude by Buenos Aires province police, who released twosuspects after labeling the attack as a minor crime, when it is clear that it is a hate crime and additionally a violation of Argentina’s anti-discrimination legislation, thusconstituting a federal crime," said Shimon Samuels, SWC Director for International Liaison and Sergio Widder, SWC Latin American Representative. "This new attack along with the recent desecration of the Ciudadela Jewish Cemetery must be treated as hatecrimes. The lack of immediate and serious responses by the authorities only encourages bigots to escalate such activity. Last December we had a meeting with the Human RightsSecretary of Buenos Aires Province, who invited us to participate in their training programs. We will only be part of those programs if there is a real political will to confronthate. We urge political and law enforcement officials to take the necessary steps to find the perpetrators of these hate crimes and re-establish a sense of trust with the Jewishcommunity," Center officials concluded. Felipe Solá, su máximaindignación con relación al ataque antisemita contra el Centro Israelita de Ramos Mejía, en cuyo frente fue pintada una enorme cruz svástica. "Como agravante, debemos señalar la vergonzosa actuación de miembros de la Policía de la Provincia de BuenosAires, que luego de detener a dos sospechosos de haber realizado el graffiti y de haber distribuido panfletos negando el Holocausto, los liberaron y caratularon la causa como‘daño’, cuando se trata de una infracción a la Ley Antidiscriminatoria, y por lo tanto un crimen federal", señalaron Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales delCentro Wiesenthal) y Sergio Widder (Representante para América Latina). Manifestamos entonces nuestra voluntad de sumarnos a la tarea educativa.
