SWC Condemns Inflammatory Statements By Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez

The Simon Wiesenthal Centercondemned Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez for labeling Colombia, "The Israel of our region". This, after Colombian military succeeded in killing a leader of the ColombianRevolutionary Armed Forces (FARC), in Ecaudor.

“Chavez’statement is inflammatory, and aimed at exacerbating a South American conflict by introducing irrelevant references to the the Middle East. If we follow the logic of theVenezuelan President’s statement, it is clear that, if Colombia would be “the Israel of the region”, then President Chavez stands with the terrorists,” said Dr. Shimon Samuels(Director for International Relations of the Simon Wiesenthal Center).

Samuels added that “in the past, Chavez has endorsed other terrorist groups such as Hizbollah, the organization was responsible for the bombing of the AMIA – Jewish CommunityCenter (Buenos Aires, 1994), and is sponsored by Iranian President Ahmadinejad, a close friend of Chavez.”

Sergio Widder (Latin American Representative of the Wiesenthal Center) said that “ President Chavez, a close and active ally of Iran's Ahmadinejad, has incorporatedanti-semitic in his state policy and this new statement has had an impact on Jewish communities in the region, and South American governments should condemn suchstatments."”

Finally, the Center praised the efforts by the Organization of American States (OAS) in order to lead a peaceful dialogue among all parties in order to prevent an armedconflict.

EL CENTRO WIESENTHAL CONDENA DECLARACIONES INCENDIARIAS DEL PRESIDENTECHAVEZ

En el marco de las acciones de Colombia contra el grupo terrorista Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia – FARC y la reacción belicista de Venezuela, el Centro SimonWiesenthal condenó las declaraciones de su presidente, Hugo Chávez, quien describió a Colombia como “el Israel de la región”.

“Los dichos de Chávez son absolutamente incendiarios, y pretenden agravar un conflicto sudamericano a través de la introducción de la problemática de Medio Oriente. En talsentido, si siguiéramos la lógica del presidente de Venezuela, queda claro que si Colombia sería ‘el Israel de la región’, Chávez toma partido por el terrorismo”, señaló el Dr.Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal).

Samuels agregó que “Chávez se ha pronunciado anteriormente en apoyo a otros grupos terroristas, como Hezbollah. Es bueno recordar que esta organización ha sido señalada comoresponsable del atentado contra la AMIA (Buenos Aires, 1994), y que goza de la protección de Irán, un aliado privilegiado de Venezuela”

Sergio Widder (Representante para América Latina del Centro Wiesenthal) manifestó que “las declaraciones del presidente venezolano tienen repercusiones en las comunidades judíasde la región. Chávez ha incorporado el antisemitismo a su política de Estado, y los gobiernos sudamericanos deben repudiar este tipo de manifestaciones. Con sus dichos, Chávezpromueve tensiones, alienta la confusión y pretende, asimismo, sumar aliados para su sociedad con el presidente de Irán Mahmoud Ahmadinejad”.

Finalmente, el Centro manifestó su anhelo en consonancia con los esfuerzos de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA) para que prevalezca el diálogo y se evite un conflictobélico. En el marco de su participación como Organización de la Sociedad Civil, el Centro Wiesenthal ha ofrecido a la OEA su cooperación y su experiencia en iniciativas orientadasa la lucha y la prevención contra el terrorismo.
