Wiesenthal Centre Commends Chile Chamber of Deputies Vote Condemning Anti-Semitic Record of Presidential Candidate

BUENOS AIRES + PARIS — The Chilean Chamber of Deputies condemned the anti-Semitic recordof presidential candidate Daniel Jadue (pictured) by avote of 79 to 47. See: https://www.camara.cl/verDoc.aspx?prmId=6821&prmTipo=RESOLUCION

Referring to the recent appearance of his high school graduation yearbook, where his 1983 classmates wrote that the best gift they couldgive him was “a Jew to target” and his current record, including his inclusion in the Simon Wiesenthal Center's 2020 Top Ten Global Anti-Semitic Incidents report.

The Deputies resolved to “express absolute rejection of all types of discrimination and allacts of intolerance that come from authorities and candidates for public office, since these turn out to be the first calls for the promotion and respect of human rights."

“It is clear that Chile is beginning to understand that whoever must guarantee social peace as a first task cannot proposehatred and discrimination against a sector of the population. Democracy is the rule of the majority, but it is as strong as the guarantee of minority rights,” said Dr. Ariel Gelblung,Director of the Wiesenthal Center for Latin America.

Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director of International Relations concluded,“We are concerned that the resolution culminates bydemanding from Jadue only a denial. This is inadequate… Moreover, that 47 votes support him is also a grave sign. Unfortunately, this was not an overwhelming vote in favor ofcoexistence."
