SWC Lauds Argentine President's UN Plea to Prosecute Iranians Linked to AMIA Terror Bombing

The Simon Wiesenthal Center praised Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s statement to the UN General Assembly in which she said:

"I would ask the Islamic Republic of Iran, in accordance with international law... accept that Argentine justice can put on trial... those [Iranian] citizens who have been accused[of the AMIA bombing].”

Wiesenthal Center officials – Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations and Sergio Widder, Latin American Representative – today met in Buenos Aires with ArgentineMinister of Justice, Aníbal Fernández, and AMIA Special Prosecution Unit head, Alberto Nisman, to discuss the current standing of the inquiry.

”Argentine justice has adequately substantiated the responsibility of Iran and Hizbollah in the AMIA bombing. These terrorists cannot remain unpunished. Our Center calls upon theinternational community to support Argentine measures to bring the perpetrators to trial” said Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center,who is currently in Buenos Aires.

“President Kirchner’s words should serve not only to punish those who killed 85 people, but also to prevent future terrorist acts. The Center will continue its cooperation withthe Argentine authorities until the murderers are duly sentenced”, added Sergio Widder, Latin American Representative of the Center.

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal elogió el reclamo de la presidenta de Argentina, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, ante la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas..

La presidenta Kirchner hizo un llamamiento para que la República Islámica de Irán “en cumplimiento de normas del derecho internacional, acceda a que la justicia argentina puedajuzgar en juicios públicos y transparentes y con las garantías de un Estado democrático a aquellos ciudadanos [iraníes] que han sido acusados” [por el atentado contra laAMIA].

Directivos del Centro Wiesenthal – el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales y Sergio Widder, Representante para América Latina – se reunieron hoy en BuenosAires con el Ministro de Justicia, Aníbal Fernández, y con el titular de la Unidad Especial de Investigación del atentado, Alberto Nisman, para dialogar acerca del estado de lapesquisa.

“La responsabilidad de Irán y de Hezbollah en el ataque contra la AMIA ha sido ampliamente acreditada por la justicia argentina.
