SWC COMMENDS ARREST OF BRAZILIAN NEO-NAZIS – OFFERS TO SHARE EXPERTISE WITH LAWENFORCEMENT

The Simon Wiesenthal Center commended the Governor of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), Yeda Crusius, for the arrest ofa neo-Nazi group in Porto Alegre.

In a letter to governor Crusius, Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director for International Relations) and Sergio Widder(Latin American Director) stated that “we congratulate the police officials who dismantled the neo-Nazi group Neuland –New Land. According to news reports, this group had planneda series of violent attacks against Jewish and gay targets”.

Samuels noted that “the investigation should go deeper, in order to establish the connections of this group withsimilar gangs in Brazil and abroad, as well as to identify their sources for funding and recruitment modalities”.

Widder added that “our Center does a systematic research on the use of Internet as a tool for incitement to hateand terrorism. We offer to share our expertise on this field with the authorities and the law enforcement of Rio Grande do Sul”.

The Center’s officials recalled that, in the past, a revisionist editorial house which published Holocaust denialbooks, ‘Revisao’, was dismantled in Porto Alegre, according to the Brazilian anti-hate legislation.

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal felicitó a la gobernadora del Estado de Rio Grande do Sul (Brasil) Yeda Crusius, por elarresto de un grupo neonazi en la ciudad de Porto Alegre.

En una carta a la gobernadora Crusius, el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del CentroWiesenthal) y Sergio Widder (Director para América Latina), señalaron el reconocimiento a las fuerzas policiales “que desactivaron un peligroso grupo neonazi denominadoNeuland (“Nueva Tierra”). De acuerdo con los reportes periodísticos, este grupo había planeado una serie de ataques violentos contra blancos de las comunidades judías ygay”.

Samuels destacó que “es necesario que se profundice la investigación para establecer los vínculos que este grupotiene tanto en otros estados dentro de Brasil como a nivel internacional, así como también las fuentes de financiamiento y las modalidades de reclutamiento deadherentes”.

Widder agregó que “nuestro Centro investiga desde hace más de una década el uso de Internet como herramienta paraincitar al odio y al terrorismo, y ofrecemos a las autoridades de Rio Grande do Sul nuestra experiencia para compartirla con los organismos policiales y de investigaciónpertinentes”.

Los directivos del Centro Wiesenthal recordaron, asimismo, que en el pasado la ciudad de Porto Alegre fue la sedede la editorial Revisao, que publicaba textos que negaban el Holocausto y que fue desmantelada debido a la legislación antidiscriminatoria vigente en Brasil.
