The Simon Wiesenthal Center welcomes the decision of Israel’s Cable and Satellite Broadcasting Council to suspend the license of the "Shelanu” cable channel which broadcasts inHebrew. Shleanu is dedicated to converting Jews. It would have had free access to broadcast its missiomary campaigns into every Israel home.
Rabbis Abraham Cooper, Associate Dean of the Center and Director, Global Social Action at its Ed Snider Social Action Institute and Yitzchok Adlerstein, the Center’s Director of Interfaith Affairs, took their concerns directly to the many Christian friendsof Israel in an op-ed in The Christian Post. Israeli law, they wrote, offered a compromisebetween the Christian core value of spreading its message, and historic Jewishconcerns at efforts toconvert their people.“That law (whichdoes not ban missionary activity in Israel, but draws a line at attempting to draw in minors) should be respected as a fair and equitable compromise between Jews and Christians, and betweenIsrael’s dual concerns as a Jewish and democratic state.”
“Israel continues to be the only place in the Middle East in which the Christian population not onlygrows, but is appreciated by its dominant faith community,” added Rabbis Cooper and Adlerstein. “We hope and pray that the good-will and mutual understanding that have been nourished for decadesbetween Jews and Christians will continue to grow.”
