IN WAKE OF INFLAMMATORY ANTISEMITIC TV SLANDER: WIESENTHAL CENTER URGES SECRETARY OF WORSHIP TO REVOKE LEGAL STATUS OFARGENTINE MUSLIM GROUP

The Simon Wiesenthal Center demanded that Argentina’s Secretary of Worship revokethe legal status of the “House for Propagation of Islam,” after its leader Sheik Mohsen Ali (pictured)made violent antisemitic statements on television.

In a letter to Guillermo Olivieri, Argentina’s Secretary of Worship, Dr. Shimon Samuels and Sergio Widder, the Wiesenthal Center’s Director forInternational Relations and Latin American Representative (respectively), noted that, “While debating the painful situation in the Middle East on the Hora Clave TV show, Sheik Mohsen Ali statedthat ‘day after day, the Israelis are going for daily ration of human blood and flesh.’”

“Such words violate the very basic norms of Argentinian society, a multicultural society integrated by descendants of immigrants from all over theworld,” wrote Samuels and Widder. “Sheik Ali has presented a modern version of the horrific blood libel, the medieval antisemitic canard that Jews slaughter Christian children to use their bloodto bake matza, the unleavened bread that Jews eat during Passover. By invoking such outrageous and dangerous imagery Sheik Ali has used his status and the status of his organization to propagateviolent hatred, not religion,” they continued.

Under the Argentinian law, the Secretary of Worship, who reports to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is responsible for bestowing legal status toreligious institutions.

“Sheik Mohsen Ali should be held responsible for any violent act against Jewish individuals or institutions inspired by his words. We demand that theSecretary of Worship launch an investigation that would lead to the revocation of the legal status of his ‘House for Propagation of Islam,’” Samuels and Widder concluded.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center is one of the largest international Jewish human rights organizations with over 400,000 member families in the United States. It is an NGO at international agenciesincluding the United Nations, UNESCO, the OSCE, the OAS and the Council of Europe.
