NEO-NAZIS IN CHILE: SWC OFFERS ADVICE ON ANTI-HATE LEGISLATION AND TRAINING MODULE FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT

Following a series of attacks and threats by neo-Nazi groups in Chile, the Wiesenthal Center offered guidance and advice onanti-hate legislation and training modules for law enforcement of that country.

In a letter to the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Antonio Leal Labrin, Shimon Samuels (Director for International Liaisonof the Simon Wiesenthal Center) and Sergio Widder (Latin American Representative) said that “we share your concern regarding the threat of these groups to the democratic system.”

“Our Center is a leading organization in confronting these kind of groups. The modern communication technologies such as theInternet have become a fertile field for the development of hate groups, and have raised the problem to a transnational level. The Wiesenthal Center’s initiatives in this matter are aimed notonly at confronting neo-Nazis but also at promoting anti-hate legislation and tolerance education activities,” they added.

“We offer the Center’s advice on anti-hate legislation to the Chilean Parliament. There are regional precedents that could serveas a model for Chile,” they concluded.

In a letter to the Minister of Interior, Andrés Zaldívar Larraín, the Center offered to present its “Digital Hate 2006” reportin the framework of a training module on this subjet for the “Carabineros” law enforcement.

NEONAZIS EN CHILE: EL CENTRO WIESENTHAL OFRECE ASESORAMIENTO EN MATERIA DE LEGISLACIÓN ANTIDISCRIMINATORIA Y CAPACITACIÓNPARA FUERZAS DE SEGURIDAD

Luego de una serie de ataques y amenazas provocados por grupos neonazis en Chile, el Centro Simon Wiesenthal ha ofrecido asesoramiento en materia de legislación antidiscriminatoria y módulos decapacitación a las autoridades de ese país.

En una carta dirigida al Presidente de la Cámara de Diputados, Antonio Leal Labrín, Shimon Samuels (Director de RelacionesInternacionales del Centro Wiesenthal) y Sergio Widder (Representante para América Latina), manifestaron que “compartimos su preocupación acerca de las amenazas que los grupos neonazisrepresentan para el sistema democrático”.

“Nuestro Centro constituye una organización líder en el campo de la lucha contra este tipo de agrupaciones que, con su discursoy su proceder violento, pretenden alterar las bases de la convivencia social. Adicionalmente, las nuevas tecnologías de comunicación, como Internet, se han convertido en un campo fértil para elcrecimiento y el intercambio entre este tipo de grupos, y han elevado el problema a un nivel transnacional, que ya no reconoce fronteras. En tal sentido, las iniciativas del Centro Wiesenthalestán ligadas no sólo a las denuncias contra los grupos neonazis, sino también a la promoción de normativa antidiscriminatoria y de actividades y programas educativos en favor de la tolerancia yel respeto”, agregaron.

“Por ello, ofrecemos nuestro asesoramiento en materia de legislación antidiscriminatoria a la Cámara de Diputados que Ud.preside. Cabe destacar que existen antecedentes en la región que pueden resultar una referencia de interés para Chile”, manifestaron Samuels y Widder.

En otra carta al Ministro del Interior, Andrés Zaldívar Larraín, el Centro propuso presentar el informe “Digital Hate 2006”,acerca del discurso del odio en Internet, en el marco de un módulo de capacitación sobre esta temática para la fuerza de Carabineros de Chile.
