The Simon Wiesenthal Center lauded today’s ruling by the 6^th Circuit Court of Appeals to allow the U.S. Justice Department to deport alleged Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk toGermany to stand trial on 29,000 counts of complicity in the murder of Jews at the Sobibor death camp during WWII.

NEW SURVEILLANCE VIDEOS DEBUNK ACCUSED NAZI WAR CRIMINAL CLAIMS OF ILL HEALTH

The Simon Wiesenthal Center is urging the UnitedStates to immediately deport Ohio resident, John Demjanjuk, to Germany to stand trial for his complicity in the murder of 29,000Jews at the Sobibor death camp during WWII. Earlier this month Demjanjuk was given a last minute reprieve due to claims that he was too ill to travel.

A Munich court has issued an arrest warrant for this man, who stands accused of aiding andabetting the murder of at least 29,000 Jewish civilians at the Sobibor Death Camp in Nazi- occupied Poland during World War II. Approximately 250,000 Jews fromthroughout Nazi-occupied Europe were killed there. Are we sure Demjanjuk was at Sobibor? Well, 11 years after exercising all of the legal rights, the chief judge of theFederal District Court in Cleveland found that the US Department of Justice proved that Demjanjuk "contributed to the process by which thousands of Jews were murdered by asphyxiation with carbonmonoxide" in the gas chambers at Sobibor. And while the Israeli Supreme Court ordered his release when doubt was raised whether he was Treblinka's "Ivan TheTerrible", there has never been any doubt this man abetted genocide atSobibor. Prosecutors have presented captured SS documents found in archives in 4 different countries, including Germany. Thatpaper trail was confirmed by the postwar testimony of another Ukrainian guard who served with him at both Sobibor and later Flossenbuerg. In the US proceedings, the Department of Justice's Officeof Special Investigation on Nazi War Crimes(OSI) provedeverything under a standard of proof that, according to the US Supreme Court, is"substantially identical" to the "beyond-a-reasonable-doubt standard" that applies in criminalcases.On April 28, 2009 Simon Wiesenthal Center dean and associate dean Rabbis Marvin Hier and AbrahamCooper called on the 6^th circuit federal court to order the immediate deportation of John Demjanjuk to Germany to standtrial.
