On Anniversary Of Argentina's Israeli Embassy Bombing SWC Urges Creation of Independent Investigative Unit

On 15th Anniversary of Israeli Embassy Bombing Simon Wiesenthal Center Urges ArgentineGovernment to Establish Independent Investigative Unit

On the eve of the 15th anniversary of the bombing of the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires, the Simon WiesenthalCenter urged the Argentine government to establish an independent investigative unit to deal exclusively with this case, one modeled after the unit establishedto investigate the bombing of the AMIA Jewish Community Center.

In a letter to Justice Minister Alberto Iribarne, Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations, and SergioWidder, Latin American Representative, stated that March 17, 1992, is marked as the date when international terrorism first hit Argentina. Unfortunately, that date is not only linked to atragic event, but also to impunity. It is clear that the lack of action by the Argentine State after that attack created a suitable climate that led to the terrorist attack againstthe AMIA two years later.”

“As we approach a new anniversary of the bombing of the Israeli Embassy, our Center proposes that the Argentinegovernment sets up a special and independent investigation unit, modeled after the one that is already working on the AMIA case. Considering the results achieved so far on this case, itis appropriate to evaluate such a step in the case of the attack against the Israeli Embassy”, they added.

“The search for truth and the sanction to those responsible for the attack against the Embassy would mean not onlythat justice is served, but also might prevent future threats”, Samuels and Widder concluded.
