The Simon Wiesenthal Center(SWC) joins millions of people the world over commending the advances in medicine achieved by the 2019 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology inStockholm.
Sadly, this year the announcement of the Nobel Prize is seriously compromised by the fact that the Karolinska Institute (and its affiliate Karolinska Hospital) are involved in a major scandal ofhistory’s oldest cancerous hate in its midst: anti-Semitism.
The Karolinska Institute has to this day systematically failed to take concrete actions to deal fairly and equitably with a well-documented case of blatant anti-Semitism, perpetrated by an activeresearcher at the famous Institute (as well as former senior official at the affiliated Karolinska University Hospital).
Instead of standing with the victims of anti-Semitic harassment, the Karolinska Institute has only attempted to deflect responsibility, ignoring the fact that both the perpetrators and thoseresponsible for the ongoing cover-up, remain at the Karolinska Institute and at the Hospital, while the victims have been institutionally retaliated against for demanding justice.
We urge the Karolinska Institute to reverse course, repair the damage done and begin the healing process without further delay. Continuing to fail to adopt a true policy of zero-toleranceagainst anti-Semitism and other forms of racism will only further stain its good name. The SWC and all those seeking justice hope that by December 10th, the day the new laureates will receive theworld‘s most prestigious award in Medicine or Physiology, will receive it from an institution worthy of the prize, an honourable Karolinska Institute.
