SWC Applauds Argentina's President's Request Before UN General Assembly - Listen to related podcast

SWC APPLAUDS ARGENTINA'S PRESIDENT'S REQUEST BEFORE UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY

President Kirchner calls on the international community to cooperate in seeking justice for the AMIA bombing.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center applauded the request made by Argentine President Nestor Kirchner beforethe UN General Assembly. In his speech, Kichner asked the international community to cooperate so that “the Islamic Republic of Iran collaborates with the application ofinternational law in order to achieve justice [in the case of the AMIA – Jewish community center bombing]. Nothing more, but nothing less.”

“We believe that President Kirchner’s words are eloquent, and go in the same direction as the work developed by Prosecutor Alberto Nisman, which led to the warrants issued by theArgentine justice against former Iranian president Rafsanjani and his accomplices, for their responsibility in planning the terrorist attack against AMIA,” said Shimon Samuels,Director for International Relations of the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

Kirchner requested that Iran accepts and respects the jurisdiction of Argentine courts.

“President Kirchner not only referred to the 1994 bombing against AMIA, but also to the terrorist attack which destroyed the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires, two years before. Inthe AMIA case, a link to Iran was established by a court. We hope that this precedent might also give a new impulse to the Israeli Embassy case; our Center has suggested that aSpecial Investigation Unit, modeled after the one existing on the AMIA case, be set up for the Israeli Embassy bombing investigation,” added Sergio Widder, Latin AmericanRepresentative of the Wiesenthal Center.

“We expect that the democratic nations of the world will support the warrants against those implicated in the AMIA bombing during the next Interpol General Assembly, due to beheld next November, so that they could be brought before the bars of justice,” Samuels concluded.
