The Simon Wiesenthal Center condemned the desecration of a Jewish cemetery inConcepción del Uruguay (Entre Rios, Argentina), where swastika graffiti were daubed on the perimeter walls.
Jewish immigrants to Argentina drawn to the BaronHirsch settlements in the late 19th century first established their agricultural cooperatives in Entre Rios. They later became romanticized as “los gauchos judíos” (“Jewish cowboys”).
In a letter to Entre Rios Government Minister, Adán Bahl, Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center) and Sergio Widder (the Center’s Director for LatinAmerica) stated that “such assaults on the dead signal danger to the living and can have no place in a democratic Argentina. We expect a prompt and bold response from the authorities of aprovince that has been long connected to the history of Argentine Jewry. This act demands an immediate investigation to identify and arrest the perpetrators of this desecration”.
“Schools in the Province must be exposed to Holocaust education to prevent future such attacks. We are ready to provide materials turn this desecration into an opportunity for tolerance buildingin cooperation with the local authorities”, concluded the Center’s officials.

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal condenó la profanación de un cementerio judío en Concepción del Uruguay (provincia de Entre Ríos), en cuyos muros externos aparecieron grafitis con crucesesvásticas.
En una carta al ministro de Gobierno, Justicia yEducación de la provincia de Entre Ríos, Adán Bahl, el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal) y Sergio Widder (Director para América Latina)manifestaron que “estos ataques contra los muertos son señales de alerta para los vivos, y no deben tener lugar en una Argentina democrática. Esperamos que haya una rápida respuesta de parte delas autoridades de una provincia tan vinculada a la historia de la comunidad judía argentina. El hecho demanda una investigación inmediata para identificar y arrestar a los responsables”.
“La educación acerca del Holocausto debe integrar el currículo escolar de la provincia para prevenir futuros ataques. Ponemos a disposición materiales educativos de nuestra institución para podertransformar este incidente en una oportunidad para promover el respeto y la tolerancia, en cooperación con las autoridades locales”, concluyeron los directivos del Centro.
