SWC DEMANDS REMOVAL OF MONUMENT PAYING TRIBUTE TO YASSER ARAFAT IN EL SALVADOR

In a letter to Carlos Rivas Zamora, Mayor of San Salvador (El Salvador), the Simon Wiesenthal Center has urged theremoval of a recently uveiled monument on Jerusalem Street, in memory of Yasser Arafat.

The letter to Mayor Rivas Zamora, from Dr. Shimon Samuels, SWC Director for International Liaison, and SergioWidder, SWC Latin American Representative, stated, "From a humanistic perspective, it is intolerable that tribute is being paid to someone who actively boycotted the road to peacein the Middle East. Your tribute to a godfather of international terrorism such as Arafat feeds a culture of death."

"We regret this step, which goes against the history and tradition of friendship between El Salvador and the Stateof Israel. We urge you to remove the monument of Arafat and to promote initiatives to strengthen the culture of peace, respect and coexistence," they concluded.

EL CENTRO WIESENTHAL RECLAMA LA REMOCION DE MONUMENTO EN MEMORIA DE YASSER ARAFAT EN ELSALVADOR

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal reclamó al alcalde de San Salvador (El Salvador), Carlos Rivas Zamora, la remoción deun monumento en memoria de Yasser Arafat, emplazado en la calle Jerusalem de esa ciudad.

Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal) y Sergio Widder (Representante paraAmérica Latina) manifestaron en una carta dirigida a Rivas Zamora que "desde una perspectiva humanista, resulta intolerable que se le rindan honores a quien de manera activaobstaculizó el camino hacia la paz en Medio Oriente. Vuestro reconocimiento póstumo a un padrino del terrorismo internacional como Arafat alimenta una cultura de lamuerte".

"Lamentamos este paso en la dirección opuesta a la histórica y tradicional amistad entre El Salvador y el Estadode Israel. Urgimos a Ud. a remover el busto de Arafat y a promover iniciativas dirigidas a fortalecer la cultura de la paz, la convivencia y el respeto", concluyeron.
