SWC Denounces UNESCO Vote Admitting 'Palestine' as Member

'Political manouver damages UNESCO's credibility, prospects for Mideast Peace and positions Palestinians to demand international backing fortheir control of Religious and Historic Sites

Paris - The Simon Wiesenthal Center denounced today's vote at UNESCO admitting 'Palestine' as a full member as a political manouver that damages UNESCO's credibility and prospects for Middle EastPeace and is part of the Palestinians' campaign to avoid direct negotiations with the Israelis.

Additionally, the Palestinians will now move to have UNESCO declare them as the solecaretakers of key religious sites, holy to Christians and Jews. Considering their failure to protect the Tomb of Joseph from vandalism and their refusal for full access to Jewish pilgrimsis proof enough of their long range plans should they control other historic and religious sites in the Holy Land.

Everyone who cares about the protection of history in the Holy Land should be deeply worried,since Palestinian leadership dating back to Yasser Arafat have serially denied the historic links of the Jewish people to the land of Israel.

Just last month at the UN General Assembly, PA President Mahmoud Abbas said he came from the HolyLand, referencing the Prophet Mohammed and Jesus but not King David or the Prophet Isaiah.

Wiesenthal Center Shocked at Argentine Vote on Palestinian Membership atUNESCO

The Simon Wiesenthal Center expressed shock at Argentina’s vote today at the UNESCO GeneralConferece, which recognized Palestine as a member state, thereby usurping the ongoing procedures at the UN Security Council and the calls for direct bilateral negotiations by theQuartet.

Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center and ChiefDelegate to UNESCO, stated that “the Palestine Authority today took a further step in avoidance diplomacy – first they went to the UN Security Council in New York to avoid peace negotiations withIsrael, now they have seized UNESCO membership in Paris to avoid being rebuffed in New York”.

Sergio Widder, Director for Latin America, added that “this is a reward for those who rejectdirect negotiations. There is no incentive for the Palestinians: they receive a prize not for promoting but for avoiding dialogue with Israel”.

The Center stressed that Palestinians are now committed to identity theft by listing Christianand Jewish holy sites as their heritage, such as the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron, Joseph’s tomb in Nablus, Rachel’s tomb in Bethlehem, and the Church of the Nativity inBethlehem.

“The recent desecration of Joseph’s Tomb, daubed with swastika graffiti, demonstrates thatthe Palestinians are either unable or unwilling to protect such sites. We hope that Argentina and other Latin American and Caribbean countries which voted in favor of Palestinian UNESCOmembership will instruct their delegates to act in the spirit of promoting bilateral dialogue instead of boycotting direct negotiations”, Samuels and Widder concluded.

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal expresó su consternación ante el voto de Argentina durante la sesióndel día de la fecha de la Conferencia General de la UNESCO, donde se reconoció a Palestina como Estado Miembro, usurpando el espacio de las deliberaciones que tienen lugar en el Consejo deSeguridad de las Naciones Unidas y los llamamientos para negociaciones bilaterales directas por parte del Cuarteto.

El Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal y Jefe de laDelegación ante la UNESCO, señaló que “la Autoridad Palestina avanzó hoy un paso más en el camino de eludir la diplomacia – primero fueron al Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU en Nueva York paraevitar las negociaciones de paz con Israel, ahora han alcanzado membrecía ante UNESCO en Paris para evitar un rechazo en Nueva York”.

Sergio Widder, Director para América Latina, agregó que “esto es una recompensa para quienesrechazan las negociaciones directas. No hay incentivo para que los palestinos acepten dialogar. Se premia lo opuesto: eludir las negociaciones con Israel”.

El Centro destacó que los palestinos pretenderán ahora “apropiarse de la identidad” de otrospueblos, reclamando como sitios de su propio patrimonio a lugares santos cristianos y judíos, tales como la Cueva de los Patriarcas (Hebron), la Tumba de José (Nablus) y la Tumba de Raquel y laIglesia de la Natividad (Belén).

“La reciente profanación de la Tumba de José, pintarrajeada con cruces esvásticas, demuestra quelos palestinos o bien no están en condiciones, o bien no desean brindar adecuada protección a esos sitios. Esperamos que Argentina y otros países de América Latina y el Caribe que votaron a favorde la incorporación de Palestina instruyan en el futuro a sus delegados a proceder en un espíritu de promoción del diálogo bilateral en lugar de boicotear las negociaciones directas”, concluyeronSamuels y Widder.
