SWC: Meeting Between Venezuelan President Chavez and Jewish Community Leaders a Step in the Right Direction

SWC on Hugo Chavez Meeting with Jewish Leaders:"Antisemitic expressions and acts in Venezuela still require investigation and legal measures while the strategic alliancewith Iran is of overriding concern."

The Simon Wiesenthal Center considers the meeting between the President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, and a group of Jewish leaders headed by Ronald Lauder (President of the WorldJewish Congress) and Jack Terpins (President of the Latin American Jewish Congress) a step in the right direction. The meeting was intended to help normalize the relationshipbetween the Venezuelan Jewish community and its own government.

Among the most prominent antisemitic incidents that took place in Venezuela under the Chavez government are:

• Two police raids against the Hebraica Jewish Community Center of Caracas (which runs a sports club, a synagogue and a school), under the guise of searching for weapons andexplosives hidden on its premises.
• A Christmas Eve speech (2005), during which President Chavez said that "the world has wealth for all, but some minorities, among them the descendants of the murderers ofChrist, have seized the wealth of the world." The President's speech recalled the accusation of deicide and the myth of the concentration of money by the Jews.
• Permanent attacks from State-sponsored media, particularly from a TV show titled La Hojilla (The Razor Blade). On the eve of the December 2007 referendum, Mario Silva (thehost) said that the members of a Jewish family were financing a conspiracy against the government and added, "I am not an antisemite; I always said that those Jews who are notpart of the conspiracy have to speak out."
• The presence of Hizbollah in Venezuela as a consequence of Chavez' government strategic alliance with Iran, whose president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has repeatedly called for theannihilation of Israel.
• Three months ago, Venezuela's Ambassador to Russia stated that among those involved in a failed coup d'etat against Chavez, on April 11, 2002, were "many Mossad snipers, whowere Venezuelan citizens, but Jews."
  "Our Centre acknowledges and commends the commitment by the Presidents of Argentina, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, and Brazil, Luiz Incio Lula da Silva, who have facilitatedthis meeting and thus demonstrated that their fight against hate and intolerance is not rhetorical but concrete. Helping the Jews of Venezuela to have dialogue with its owngovernment should never have been necessary and, indeed, goes beyond the fight against antisemitism. It was a human rights initiative to redeem the equal citizen status ofVenezuelan Jewry," said Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center.

"We will monitor these new developments on a daily basis, but at the same time we believe that the Chavez government should investigate the attacks against the Jewish community inVenezuela and punish those responsible. LA LUCHA CONTRA EL ANTISEMITISMO DEBE TRADUCIRSE
EN HECHOS CONCRETOS

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal considera como un paso en la direccin correcta la reunin mantenida entre el presidente de Venezuela, Hugo Chvez, y un grupo de lderes judos encabezadospor Ronald Lauder (Presidente del Congreso Judo Mundial) y Jack Terpins (Presidente del Congreso Judo Latinoamericano), con vistas a normalizar las relaciones de la comunidad judavenezolana con su propio gobierno.
Entre los incidentes antisemitas ms destacados que tuvieron lugar en Venezuela bajo el gobierno de Chvez se cuentan:
Dos allanamientos contra el Centro Social, Cultural y Deportivo Hebraica de Caracas (donde funcionan un club, una sinagoga y una escuela), con la excusa de que all se acopiabanarmamentos y explosivos.
Un discurso en vsperas de la Navidad de 2005, durante el cual el presidente Chvez dijo que "el mundo tiene riquezas para todos, pero algunas minoras, entre ellas los descendientesde los asesinos de Cristo, se han apoderado de las riquezas de este mundo", reflotando la acusacin contra los judos de haber sido responsables d el deicidio (el asesinato deCristo) y fortaleciendo el mito de la concentracin de la riqueza en manos judas.
Permanentes ataques desde tribunas mediticas oficialistas, particularmente desde un programa televisivo, La hojilla, emitido a travs de un canal pblico. Durante una de susemisiones en vsperas del referendo de diciembre de 2007, el conductor, Mario Silva, mencion a los miembros de una familia juda como financistas de una conspiracin contra elgobierno y agreg que no me pueden decir antisemita; yo siempre dije que aquellos empresarios judos que no estn con la conspiracin que lo digan". En otras palabras, los judos sonculpables, a menos que se demuestre lo contrario.

La amenaza de la presencia de Hizbollah en Venezuela, como consecuencia de la alianza estratgica entre el gobierno de Chvez con el rgimen iran, cuyo presidente, MahmoudAhmadinejad, ha formulado reiterados llamamientos genocidas a favor de la destruccin de Israel.
El embajador de Venezuela en Rusia declar hace tres meses que en el fallido golpe de estado del 11 de abril de 2002, que pretendi derrocar al presidente Hugo Chvez, participaronnumerosos francotiradores del Mossad, que eran ciudadanos venezolanos pero judos.
Nuestro Centro valora y reconoce, en primer lugar, el accionar de los presidentes de Argentina, Cristina Fernndez de Kirchner, y de Brasil, Luiz Incio Lula da Silva, quienes,facilitando este encuentro, han demostrado que su compromiso contra el odio y la intolerancia no es retrico sino concreto. Ayudar a que l os judos de Venezuela tengan dilogo consu propio gobierno va ms all de la lucha contra el antisemitismo; se trata de una defensa de los derechos humanos y cvicos ms elementales, seal el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director deRelaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal.

Seguiremos con inters y cautela este nuevo rumbo que parece iniciarse, pero al mismo tiempo creemos que a la par de firmar cualquier acuerdo para erradicar el antisemitismo enAmrica Latina, el gobierno de Chvez tiene que comenzar por investigar los escandalosos ataques contra la comunidad juda en Venezuela y castigar a los responsables.
