SWC: Oppose Neo-Nazi Candidate in Buenos Aires Election

The Simon Wiesenthal Center supported the move by Buenos Aires City Councillors Gabriela Cerruti and Gonzalo Ruanova (Nuevo Encuentro bloc), who protested the candidacy of neo-Nazi leaderAlejandro Biondini (pictured) as Mayor of Buenos Aires in the July 2011 elections. Council Member ClaudioPresman (Civic Union) also joined their initiative.

Biondini, candidate of the Social Alternative (Alternativa Social) party, is well known for his praise of Nazism and Holocaust denial. His group “New Triumph Party” (“Partido Nuevo Triunfo”) hasnot been legalized by the Argentine justice as its proposals are not considered compatible with Argentine law. His attempt to make the swastika his party’s symbol was also denied by a Court. Inthe past, Biondini had supported military factions that, in 1987 and 1988, launched abortive coups d’état against democratically elected President Raul Alfonsin.

“Biondini’s political history speaks for itself. He abuses the democratic process to suppress it if he were ever to attain power”, stated Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relationsof the Wiesenthal Center.

“Biondini is now adopting a legally recognized organization in order to bypass the ruling that questions the eligibility of his own group. We call on all democratic forces to reject hiscandidacy”, added Sergio Widder, the Center’s Director for Latin America.

“Members of all parties should follow the lead of Councillors Cerruti, Ruanova and Presman in keeping racists out of municipal elections”, concluded Samuels and Widder.

El Centro Wiesenthal convoca a las fuerzas democráticas a manifestar su rechazo a la candidatura de propagandista del nazismo a la Jefatura de Gobierno de Buenos Aires

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal manifestó su apoyo a la iniciativa de los legisladores porteños Gabriela Cerruti y Gonzalo Ruanova (del bloque Nuevo Encuentro), quienes impugnaron la postulación deAlejandro Biondini para la Jefatura de Gobierno de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires en las elecciones de julio de 2011. El legislador Claudio Presman (Unión Cívica Radical) acompañó la iniciativa.

Biondini, quien se presenta como candidato del partido Alternativa Social, es conocido por su apología del nazismo y negación del Holocausto. Su agrupación “Partido Nuevo Triunfo” no fuereconocida por la justicia argentina, debido a que sus postulados son incompatibles con la ley. Anteriormente, la justicia también había rechazado su pedido de utilizar la cruz esvástica comosímbolo partidario. En el pasado, Biondini apoyó a los grupos militares que intentaron frustrados golpes de Estado contra el presidente Raúl Alfonsín, en 1987 y 1988.

“La historia política de Biondini habla por sí sola. Se abusa del proceso democrático para suprimirlo si alguna vez se alcanzara el poder”, señaló el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de RelacionesInternacionales del Centro Simon Wiesenthal.

“Biondini utiliza una estructura reconocida legalmente para eludir los límites que le impuso la justicia a su propia agrupación. Convocamos a todas las fuerzas políticas democráticas a repudiarsu postulación”, agregó Sergio Widder, Director para América Latina del Centro.

“Apoyamos este pronunciamiento de los legisladores Cerruti, Ruanova y Presman y convocamos a que miembros de todas las otras fuerzas partidarias se manifiesten en el mismo sentido”, concluyeronSamuels y Widder.
