SWC Protests Against Latin American Countries Approval of UN Human Rights Council Resolution Singling Out Israel ForCondemnation

The Wiesenthal Center protested to Foreign Affairs Ministers Jorge Taiana (Argentina), Celso Amorim (Brazil), Francisco Carrión Mena (Equator), Luis Derbez Bautista (México), JoséAntonio García Belaunde (Peru) and Reinaldo Gargano (Uruguay), condemning their support of a resolution issued on August 11 by the UN Human Rights Council which singled out Israel forcondemnation.

In a letter to those ministers, Shimon Samuels (Director for International Relations of the SWC) and Sergio Widder (Latin American Representative) noted, “At a time when the UN Security Councilwas trying to find an acceptable text for a cease-fire resolution, the Human Rights Council issued a condemnation which singled out Israel and ignored Israeli civilians who are victims ofHizbollah’s terror. The Human Rights Council resolution seems more to serve the cause of defending Hizbollah than to defending civilians on each side of the border who are the victims of thefight provoked by terrorists.”

“Latin America has suffered Hizbollah’s actions, as this organization is connected to the attacks against the Israeli Embassy (1992) and the AMIA Jewish Community Center (1994), both in BuenosAires. In light of your country’s approval of the Human Rights Council resolution, it is legitimate to ask ourselves what is the message that your government is giving to its own citizens. Is itacceptable to condemn Hizbollah when the murders take place in Latin America, but to refrain from condemning when the murders take place in Israel?” they added.

“Resolutions like the one your country supported at the Human Rights Council are far from appeasing terrorists. On the contrary, they are perceived as an encouragement and a guarantee oftolerance to their actions. We hope that your countries review such policy towards Hizbollah and other terrorist groups in the future, because these groups are a threat not only for Israelicivilians, but for democratic societies in the whole world,” Samuels and Widder concluded.

Copies of the letters to Foreign Affairs ministers were also submitted to the Executive Secretary of the OAS Inter-American Committee Against Terrorism, Steven Monblatt.

Protesta del Centro Wiesenthal contra países de América Latina que apoyaron la condena exclusivacontra Israel en el Consejo de Derechos Humanos de la ONU

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal elevó una protesta ante los cancilleres Jorge Taiana (Argentina), Celso Amorim (Brasil), FranciscoCarrión Mena (Ecuador), Luis Derbez Bautista (México), José Antonio García Belaunde (Perú) y Reinaldo Gargano (Uruguay), por el apoyo que dieron esos países a la resolución de condena contraIsrael en el Consejo de Derechos Humanos de las Naciones Unidas, reunido en Ginebra el viernes 11 de agosto.

En una carta a los cancilleres, Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal) y Sergio Widder(Representante para América Latina), destacaron que “en momentos en que el Consejo de Seguridad de las Naciones Unidas extremaba los esfuerzos para encontrar una fórmula dirigida a promover uncese del fuego que fuera aceptable para las partes en conflicto, el Consejo de Derechos Humanos emitió una condena exclusiva contra Israel, e ignoró por completo a las víctimas israelíes de laviolencia desatada por la organización terrorista Hezbollah. La resolución del Consejo de los Derechos Humanos parece estar más al servicio de la defensa de Hezbollah que de los civiles que,tanto en Israel como en el Líbano, sufren las consecuencias de un enfrentamiento provocado por los terroristas”.

“América Latina ha padecido el azote de Hezbollah, agrupación que aparece ligada directamente a los atentados producidos enBuenos Aires contra la Embajada de Israel (1992) y contra la sede de la Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina (1994). Con estos antecedentes, es legítimo preguntarnos, a la luz de la posición queasumió su país el 11 de agosto en el Consejo de Derechos Humanos, qué mensaje está dando su gobierno a sus propios ciudadanos. ¿Es aceptable condenar a Hezbollah cuando asesina en América Latinapero evitar la condena cuando asesina en Israel?”, agregaron

“Resoluciones como ésta que se aprobó en el Consejo de Derechos Humanos con el apoyo de su país están muy lejos de apaciguar alos terroristas. Por el contrario, son percibidas como un estímulo y una garantía de tolerancia hacia sus acciones. Esperamos que su país revise hacia el futuro esta política hacia Hezbollah ylas agrupaciones terroristas que amenazan ya no sólo a los civiles israelíes, sino a las sociedades democráticas en todo el mundo”, concluyeron Samuels y Widder.

El Centro hizo llegar copias de las cartas al Secretario Ejecutivo del Comité Interamericano contra el Terrorismo de la OEA,Steven Monblatt.
