SWC Supports Civil Suit Against Iran and Hizbollah for AMIA Bombing

The Simon Wiesenthal Center expressed its support to a civil claim suit brought against the Islamic Republic of Iran,against the terrorist group Hizbollah and against former Iranian officials (among them former presidente Hashemi Rafsanjani) involved in the AMIA bombing, which took place on July 18,1994, and left 85 people dead and hundreds injured.

The suit was brought by a person who was injured in the terrorist attack and who is claiming damages of one million dollars.

“This first civil suit against those involved in the attack is a very important step, and could be a precedent for others affected by the AMIA bombing to join, as well as a model for thefamilies of the victims of other terrorist attacks,” said Shimon Samuels (Director for International Relations of the Simon Wiesenthal Center) and Sergio Widder (Latin AmericanRepresentative).

“We urge the Court to accept the claim; the families of the victims need to feel supported by the Argentinian State in their fight for justice,” Samuels and Widder concluded.

Apoyo del Centro Wiesenthal a demanda civil contra Irán y Hezbollah por el atentado contra laAMIA

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal manifestó hoy su apoyo a la acción civil presentada ante un tribunal argentino contra laRepública Islámica de Irán, contra el grupo terrorista Hezbollah y contra los ex–funcionarios iraníes (entre los que se incluye el ex–presidente Hashemi Rafsanjani) señalados comoresponsables del atentado contra la AMIA el 18 de julio de 1994, que provocó la muerte de 85 personas y centenares de heridos.

La demanda fue presentada por un individuo que fue herido a causa del atentado terrorista, quien reclama unaindemnización de un millón de dólares.

“Esta primera demanda civil individual contra los responsables iraníes es un paso muy importante, y puede resultar tantoun precedente para que otros afectados por el atentado a la AMIA se sumen, como también un modelo para las familias de las víctimas de otras acciones terroristas”, señalaron ShimonSamuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal) y Sergio Widder (Representante para América Latina).

“Urgimos al tribunal a aceptar la demanda; las familias de las víctimas deben sentirse respaldadas por el estadoargentino en su búsqueda de justicia”, concluyeron Samuels y Widder.
