Twentieth Anniversary of the Terrorist Attack on Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires: “Inaction in 1992 encouraged Tehran’s Murderous AMIA pogrom two years later. Justice is Imperative to Contain the Iran

On the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attack on the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires (March 17, 1992), which left 29 dead and over 200 wounded, the Simon Wiesenthal Centercalled on the Argentine government to establish an independent investigative unit, to solely focus on this case.
In a letter to theMinister of Justice and Human Rights, Julio Alak, Dr. Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center) and Sergio Widder (Director for LatinAmerica), noted that “results achieved by Special Prosecutor Alberto Nisman, exposing Iran´s involvement in the AMIA Jewish Center bombing of 1994, prove the value of aninvestigation based on concentrated attention and resources. This should be the model for a belated Israeli Embassy enquiry.”

“After twenty years of frustration, we urge the Argentine government to redouble efforts to identify the perpetrators of the Israeli Embassy atrocity and bring them to justice. AsSimon Wiesenthal taught us, time can not be a pretext for impunity,” added Widder.
“On this anniversary of the Embassy blast, we stand in solidarity with the families of the victims and their continued yearning for justice and closure,” concluded Samuels andWidder.

Al cumplirse 20 años del ataque terrorista contra la Embajada de Israel en Buenos Aires (17 de marzo de 1992), que tuvo un saldo de 29 muertos y decenas de heridos, el Centro SimonWiesenthal solicitó al gobierno argentino la creación de una Unidad Fiscal independiente que se concentre de manera exclusiva en este caso.
En una carta al Ministro de Justicia y Derechos Humanos, Julio Alak, el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro) y Sergio Widder (Director para AméricaLatina) destacaron que “los resultados obtenidos por el fiscal Alberto Nisman, quien expuso la responsabilidad de Irán en el caso de la AMIA, indican el valor de concentrar laatención y los recursos. Este debe ser un modelo para una postergada pesquisa en el caso de la Embajada de Israel”.
“La falta de una investigación en 1992 estimuló a Teherán para su pogromo asesino dos años más tarde. La amenaza iraní crece de modo exponencial en Latinoamérica, especialmente através de su presencia en el bloque ALBA liderado por Venezuela. Las plataformas para misiles Shahab 3, que Irán controla en territorio venezolano, son una espada de Damocles quepone en riesgo la seguridad regional”, señaló Samuels.
“Tras veinte años de frustraciones, urgimos al gobierno argentino a redoblar los esfuerzos para identificar a los responsables del ataque contra la Embajada israelí y llevarlos antela justicia. Como el propio Simon Wiesenthal nos enseñó, el paso del tiempo no puede ser un pretexto para la impunidad”, agregó Widder.
“En este nuevo aniversario del atentado contra la Embajada israelí, manifestamos nuestra solidaridad con las familias de las víctimas y con su lucha permanente para que es hagajusticia”, concluyeron Samuels y Widder.
