::UPDATE:: Pagina/12 Issues Apology - Wiesenthal Center Expresses Indignation at a Comic Strip Published in Argentine Daily Pagina/12 Mocking Victims of the Holocaust; Urges Immediate Public Apology

En las últimas horas, este diario recibió protestas institucionales y personales por la tira publicada el jueves pasado en el suplemento NO, en la que se hacía referencia a los camposde exterminio nazi. De acuerdo con su histórica toma de posición en contra de la discriminación, Página/12 lamenta haber provocado angustia o dolor y pide disculpas a todos los quepudieran sentirse afectados.

In the last hours, this newspaper received institutional and personal protests against the comic published last Thursday in the "NO" section, referring to the Nazi extermination camps.According to its historic position against discrimination, Pagina/12 regrets having caused anguish or pain and apologizes to all those who might have been affected.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center expressed indignation at a comic strip titled “An Adventure of David Gueto (Ghetto),” in the weekly 'YoungCulture" section of the Argentine daily Pagina/12, (http://www.pagina12.com.ar/diario/suplementos/no/34-5779-2012-01-19.html).

Its author, Gustavo Sala apparently sought to parody DJ David Guetta with a character named “David Gueto (Ghetto),” who promotes a dancing party for the prisoners in a Nazi concentrationcamp. When prisoners complain that “we are being gassed and exterminated,” a caricature of Adolf Hitler tells them that “some dancing won’t make you any worse,” adding that “if they arerelaxed, you get a better soap.”

“This so-called parody is beyond offensive. As a newspaper that has been a champion for human rights and fight against racism since its foundation, we expect the editors ofPagina/12 to immediately and publically apologize for this distortion of history. Pagina/12 "Young Culture" section would better serve its youthful readers by teachingthem the importance of preserving the memory of the Nazi genocide through remebrance, education and prevention of human rights violations,” stated Sergio Widder, Director for LatinAmerica office of the Wiesenthal Center.

El Centro Wiesenthal repudia historieta de Página /12 que banaliza el Holocausto – Reclama una disculpa pública

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal manifestó su profundo disgusto por la publicación de la historieta “Una aventura de David Gueto” en el suplemento “NO” de Página/12 del 19 de enero de 2012(http://www.pagina12.com.ar/diario/suplementos/no/34-5779-2012-01-19.html).

Su autor, Gustavo Sala, pretende parodiar al DJ David Guetta con un personaje llamado “David Gueto” que promueve una fiesta bailable para los prisioneros de un campo de concentraciónnazi. Cuando los prisioneros se quejan que “no tenemos nada que festejar, nos matan y exterminan en masa”, una caricatura de Adolf Hitler les dice que “un poco de diversión no les vendríamal”, y agrega que “si están relajados, los jabones salen mejor”.

“Esta supuesta parodia es ofensiva. Como una publicación que desde sus orígenes ha defendido los derechos humanos y la lucha contra el racismo, esperamos que Página/12 expresepúblicamente sus disculpas por esta distorsión de la historia. Sería mucho mejor que la sección para jóvenes del diario les enseñara la importancia de preservar la memoria del genocidionazi como modelo para la recordación, la educación y la prevención de violaciones a los derechos humanos”, manifestó Sergio Widder, Director para América Latina del Centro.
