Wiesenthal Center Alarmed at Terrorist Connections of New Venezuelan Vice-President

The Wiesenthal Center voiced its alarm that the new Vice-President of Venezuela, Elias Jaua, reportedly held ties with the terrorist groups ETA (Spain), FARC (Colombia) and the former far rightgroup of Argentine Army officers known as “Carapintadas” the “painted faces”seehttp://www.lanacion.com.ar/nota.asp?nota_id=1228113.

The “Carapintadas” were an ultra-nationalist faction of the Argentine Army that attempted coups d’etat against the Alfonsin presidency (once in 1987, twice in 1998), and again during the Menempresidency (1990). Their main leader was the late Argentine Colonel Mohamed Ali Seineldin, an ultra-nationalist officer who promoted the idea of shared values between Christianity and Islam, andcalled this hybrid “Chrislam”. Reportedly, Seineldin would tell his new recruits that “there are no green horses, nor decent Jews” (“no hay caballos verdes ni judíos decentes”). Seineldin wasalso a supporter of Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez.

“The dangerous political liaisons of Vice-President Jaua seem to fit Venezuelan support to other member groups of the terrorist international, such as Iran-backed Hizbollah and Hamas. Venezuelais Iran’s main partner in the region, and the beachhead for its penetration in Latin America,” stated Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center.

“Venezuela is intent on becoming a full member of the South America Common Market (MERCOSUR). Vice-President Jaua’s association with radical terrorist groups further impugn Venezuela’s candidacyto join a bloc committed to democracy”, added Sergio Widder, the Center’s Director for Latin America.

Preocupación del Centro Wiesenthal debido a los vínculos del nuevo vicepresidente de Venezuela con grupos terroristas

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal manifestó su alarma acerca de los informes sobre los antecedentes del nuevo vicepresidente de Venezuela, Elías Jaua, cuya agenda de relaciones incluiría vínculos conlos grupos terroristas ETA y FARC, así como también, en el pasado, contactos con el grupo de “Carapintadas” del Ejército Argentino (ver http://www.lanacion.com.ar/nota.asp?nota_id=1228113).

El Centro recordó que la facción de los “Carapintadas” llevó adelante tres intentos de golpe de estado durante la presidencia de Raul Alfonsin y uno durante la de Carlos Menem. El principal liderde los “Carapintadas”, el fallecido coronel Mohamed Ali Seineldin, pregonaba un acercamiento entre el Cristianismo y el Islam (“Crislam”) y solía incluir en sus arengas a los soldados la consigna“no hay caballos verdes ni judíos decentes”. Durante sus primeros años en la política, el presidente venezolano Hugo Chávez contó con el apoyo de Seineldín.

"La peligrosos vínculos políticos del vicepresidente Jaua parecen sintonizar bien con el apoyo venezolano a otros grupos terroristas internacionales que tienen apoyo iraní, como Hezbollah yHamas. Venezuela es el principal socio de Irán en la región, y la cabecera de playa para su penetración en América Latina”, señaló el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionalesdel Centro Wiesenthal.

“Dado que Venezuela pretende incorporarse como miembro pleno del MERCOSUR, debemos recordar la vigencia de la ‘Cláusula democrática’, según la cual sólo pueden ser miembros del bloque paísesgobernados por regímenes democráticos; los vínculos del vicepresidente Jaua con grupos terroristas y con grupos pro-dictadura impugnan la capacidad de Venezuela de integrarse al bloque”, agregóSergio Widder, Director para América Latina del Centro.
