Wiesenthal Centre to Belgian Interior Minister: “Lent Carnival Float Sickens World Jewry and Sullies Belgium as Host of the European Institutions”

The Simon Wiesenthal Centre was represented by Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations and Dr. Ariel Gellbung, its Latin American Representative, at the 8th “Summit of theAmericas”.
In meetings with Luis Almagro, Secretary General of the 35 member Organization of American States (OAS) and the Presidents of Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and Uruguay (see photos), the Centre raisedits concerns regarding the increasing role of Iran in Latin America and the Caribbean, especially in its seeding of Hezbollah terrorist cells and the growth of Islamist and extreme rightantisemitism.
Samuels cited the report of the slain Prosecutor, Alberto Nisman, that was to be disclosed in the Argentine Congress, the day of his murder. “A personal friend and of the Centre, Nisman sharedmuch of his findings at a dinner in London, some weeks before he was shot. He traced a network of Iranian sponsored sleepers from the Argentina –Brazil- Paraguay Triple Frontier región toVenezuela, Surinam and into the Caribbean.”
This information was received by Almagro as an alert to the OAS. He stated: “It is vital that Iran cooperate with Argentina´s demand for justice and settle the AMIA case and their possibleresponsability.”
Gelblung brought to Almagro´s attention the increasing anti-Jewish atmosphere, emanating from Palestinan circles in Chile.
The officials protested the welcome, ironically on Yom HaShoa (Holocaust Rememberance Day), granted to Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif by Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez as also by BrazilianPresident Temer.
Almagro, on the other hand, had declared “It is essential that all countries acknowledge the Holocaust and the existence of Israel. No democratic state can deny the right of that country toexist”.
The Centre thanked Colombian President Santos for the immediate ban imposed on a celebration of the 129th anniversary of Hitler´s birthday on 20 april in Medellin. Paraguayan Ambassador to Perú,Julio Duarte, confirmed the adoption of similar measures. Both cases were based on information provided by the Wiesenthal Centre
Samuels and Gelblung commended Mexican President, Peña Nieto, for his country´s cooperation in the Center´s campaign against racism in football, as also the Cultural Ministry of Perú´santi-racism team.
In a meeting with Israeli Ambassador to Perú, Rafael Singer, it was decided to launch the Center´s exhibition, “People, Book, Land: The 3.500 Year Relationship of the Jewish People with the HolyLand”, in Lima during Israel´s 70th anniversary year.
The program concluded with a visit to the Jewish Community of Perú, where the co-Presidents, Sergio Koremblit and Shlomo Gabel, expressed their support for the exhibition display in Lima.

El Centro Wiesenthal en la "VIII Cumbre de las Américas"
Lima, 15 de abril de 2018
El Centro Simon Wiesenthal estuvo representado por el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales y el Dr. Ariel Gellbung, su Representante de América Latina, en la VIII "Cumbre delas Américas".
En reuniones con Luis Almagro, Secretario General de los 35 miembros de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA) y los Presidentes de Uruguay, Brasil, Colombia y México (ver fotos), el Centroexpresó su preocupación sobre el creciente papel de Irán en América Latina y el Caribe, especialmente en la disposición de células terroristas de Hezbollah y el crecimiento del antisemitismoislamista y de extrema derecha.
Samuels citó el informe del fiscal asesinado, Alberto Nisman, que debía ser revelado en el Congreso argentino, el día posterior al de su asesinato. "Amigo personal y del Centro, Nisman compartiógran parte de sus hallazgos en una cena en Londres, algunas semanas antes de recibir el disparo. Él rastreó una red de agentes durmientes patrocinados por Irán desde la zona de la Triple FronteraArgentina-Brasil-Paraguay a Venezuela, Surinam y el Caribe ".
Esta información fue recogida por Almagro como alerta a la OEA. El Secretario General declaró: "Es vital que Irán coopere con la demanda de justicia de Argentina y resuelva el caso AMIA y suposible responsabilidad".
Gelblung alertó a Almagro sobre la creciente atmósfera antijudía que emana de los círculos palestinos en Chile.
Los funcionarios protestaron la bienvenida, irónicamente, en Yom HaShoa (Día de la Recordación del Holocausto), concedida al Ministro de Asuntos Exteriores iraní Zarif por el Presidente uruguayoTabaré Vázquez y también por el Presidente brasileño Temer.
Almagro, por otro lado, había declarado que "es imprescindible que todos los países reconozcan el Holocausto y la existencia de Israel". Ningún estado democrático debería negar el derecho de esepaís a existir ".
El Centro agradeció al Presidente colombiano Santos por la suspensión inmediata de la celebración del 129° aniversario del cumpleaños de Hitler el 20 de abril en Medellín, lograda gracias a lasautoridades y ciudadanía en ese país. En el mismo sentido, el embajador de Paraguay en Perú, Julio Duarte, informó al Centro que gracias a su información se abortó un acto en igual sentido enAsunción.
Samuels y Gelblung felicitaron al Presidente de México, Peña Nieto, por la cooperación de su país en la campaña del Centro contra el racismo en el fútbol Del mismo modo, se planificó trabajoconjunto con el Ministerio de Cultura del Perú y su programa “Alerta contra el Racismo”.
En una reunión con el Embajador de Israel en Perú, Rafael Singer, se decidió lanzar la exposición del Centro, "Pueblo, Libro, Tierra: 3.500 Años de Relación del Pueblo Judío con Tierra Santa", enLima durante el Año del 70º aniversario de Israel.
El programa concluyó con una visita a la Comunidad Judía del Perú, donde los Copresidentes, Sergio Koremblit y Shlomo Gabel, expresaron su apoyo a la exhibición en Lima.
