Wiesenthal Center Calls for Immediate Annulment of Argentine–Iran Accord on AMIA Bombing Following Tehran’s Demand that INTERPOL Arrest Warrants be Suspended

Key contradictions between Foreign Ministers void further negotiations

In a letter to Foreign Minister Hector Timerman, the Simon Wiesenthal Center called on Argentina to immediately anull its accord withIran on the AMIA bombing. This follows Tehran’s demand that INTERPOL arrest warrants (a.k.a. red notices) be suspended againstits citizens implicated in the atrocity.

Timerman, pictured center with SWC officials during a meeting in his office late last year, had guaranteed that the Memorandum ofUnderstanding of 27 January between both countries, would not affect the red notices obliging third countries to detain on sight any of the 5 Iranian accomplices. This was repeated by theArgentine Foreign Minister when he distributed a letter from INTERPOL on 15 March. Timerman’s guarantee was rapidly negated by the subsequent statement of his Iranian counterpart, AliAkbar Salehi, who argued that, as a result of the agreement, “INTERPOL must quit issuing the red notices.”

Dr. Shimon Samuels, SWC Director for International Relations, emphasized, “Iran displayed its bad faith in so quicklyviolating the object of the Accord by unambiguously revealing its intent to use it as an instrument to elude justice. ... This mockery of INTERPOL illustrates the Tehran regime'scriminal character and impugns its credibility in ongoing nuclear negotiations and to cover up its responsibility,” added Samuels.

“Iran is the godfather of international terrorism. When the Accord was first announced, we denounced it as whitewash. Iran aims to putan end to the AMIA case and Argentina cannot facilitate that purpose,” noted Sergio Widder, SWC Director for Latin America.

“The key contradictions between the respective statements of the Argentine and Iranian Foreign Ministers void any furthernegotiations,” concluded Samuels and Widder.

En una carta al Canciller Héctor Timerman, el Centro Simon Wiesenthal reclamó que Argentina anule de manera inmediata su acuerdo conIrán en relación con la causa AMIA. El pedido fue realizado luego de conocerse el reclamo de Teherán para que se suspendieran las notificaciones rojas emitidas por INTERPOL contraciudadanos iraníes implicados en ese ataque terrorista.
El Canciller Timerman había garantizado que el Memorando de Entendimiento suscripto el 27 de enero no afectaría el estatus de dichasnotificaciones, que obligan a terceros países a arrestar allí donde se encuentren a cualquiera de los cinco individuos afectados por las mismas. Esto fue repetido por el Cancillerargentino cuando distribuyó una carta de INTERPOL el 15 de marzo. Dos días más tarde, sus dichos fueron confrontados por su contraparte iraní, Ali Akbar Salehi, quien aseguró que, envirtud del acuerdo, “las notificaciones rojas deberían caer.”

“Irán es el gran patrocinador del terrorismo internacional. Cuando se anunció el acuerdo, lo denunciamos como un intento deencubrimiento. Irán pretende poner fin a la causa AMIA y Argentina no debe facilitarle el cumplimiento de ese propósito”, agregó Sergio Widder (Director para AméricaLatina).
