Wiesenthal Center Calls on Argentine President to Announce from the UN General Assembly Podium that the Terrorism Cover Up “Memorandum of Understanding with Iran is Now Null and Void”

On the eve of the opening of the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Simon Wiesenthal Center has called onArgentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner to announce the Memorandum of Understanding between her country and Iran as null and void. The accord, signed in January 2013, waspresented as “a step forward in achieving justice in the case of the Buenos Aires AMIA Jewish Center bombing in 1994”.

Iran and Hizbollah were implicated by Argentine Special Prosecutor Alberto Nisman as directly responsible for a terrorist attack whichkilled 85 people and injured hundreds, in a first indictment issued in 2006. On May 2013, a new indictment provided further information about Iranian and Hizbollah sleepers in nine SouthAmerican countries.

Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center, stated: “Each year, our Center first applauded your late husband, President Néstor Kirchner and thenyourself as his successor, for demanding from the UN General Assembly podium that Iran hand over the suspects to face an Argentine Tribunal.

This year, it is now clear that Argentina has fallen into an Iranian trap, we expect you –in the name of all victims of terror – to once more hold Tehran responsible and demand itsextradition of the AMIA murderers.”

Sergio Widder, the Center’s Director for Latin America, added that “after so many years of Iranian rejection, Argentina signed anagreement, ostensibly to produce results. Over six months since the Argentine Congress ratified it, the deal remains a farce.”

“It is obvious that Tehran’s goal is to employ the Memorandum as a tool to guarantee immunity for its officials who are implicated inthe atrocity. We therefore expect you, Mme. President, to denounce this free pass for terrorism as null and void and press your Congress to revoke it,” concluded the Center’sofficials.

En vísperas de la apertura de la 68ª Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas, el Centro Simon Wiesenthal solicitó a la Presidentaargentina, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, que anuncie que el Memorándum de Entendimiento entre su país e Irán es nulo e inválido. El acuerdo, firmado en enero de 2013, fue presentadocomo “un paso adelante para obtener justicia en el caso del ataque contra la AMIA”.

Irán y Hezbollah fueron implicados por el Fiscal a cargo de la Unidad de Investigación AMIA, Alberto Nisman, como responsablesdirectos por el atentado terrorista que provocó la muerte de 85 personas y centenares de heridos, a través de un primer dictamen emitido en 2006. En mayo de 2013, un nuevo dictamen sumóinformación acerca de la presencia de células dormidas de Irán y Hezbollah en nueve países de Sudamérica.

El Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal, señaló: “Cada año, nuestro Centro elogió losreclamos que formuló, en primer término, su fallecido esposo, el Presidente Néstor Kirchner, y que continuó Ud. como su sucesora, al reclamar desde el podio de la Asamblea General de laONU que Irán entregara a los sospechosos para que comparecieran ante un tribunal argentino. Este año, cuando ya es claro que Argentina quedó envuelta en un ardid iraní, esperamos que Ud.,en nombre de todas las víctimas del terrorismo, señale la responsabilidad de Teherán y reclame la extradición de los asesinos de la AMIA”.

Sergio Widder, Director para América Latina del Centro agregó que “luego de tantos años de rechazos por parte de Irán, Argentina firmóun acuerdo para, presumiblemente, obtener algún resultado. Luego de más de seis meses desde su ratificación parlamentaria, el acuerdo permanece como una farsa”.

“Es obvio que el objetivo de Irán es utilizar el Memorándum como herramienta para garantizar la impunidad de sus funcionarios que seencuentran implicados en esa atrocidad. Por ello pedimos a Ud., Sra. Presidenta, que denuncie este pase libre para el terrorismo como nulo e inválido y solicite al Congreso que lorevoque”, concluyeron los directivos del Centro.
