Wiesenthal Center Condemns Radical Catholic Interruption of Kristallnacht Commemoration at Buenos Aires Cathedral

The Simon Wiesenthal Center condemned an incident caused by radical Catholics who attempted to stop a Kristallnacht ceremony organizedat the Buenos Aires Cathedral by the Archbishop and Argentine B’nai Brith.

Having strategically seated themselves among the public, members of the St Pius XFraternity tried to stop the ceremony. They were asked to leave by Archbishop Mario Poli, who announced: “dear Jewish brothers, this is your house”.

“It was to be expected that followers of the schismatic late Marcel Lefebvre who opposed the Vatican’s 1965 repeal of Jewishresponsibility in the Crucifixion and Richard Williamson Holocaust denial, would try to continue their anti-Semitic campaign. They selected Kristallnacht, the most sensitive occasion toexpress their hate.

We applaud Monsignor Poli for resisting them. As Buenos Aires diocese successor to Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, known today as Pope Francis, he is following the example of His Holiness as afriend of the Jewish people and a champion against bigotry,” stated Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center.

“As Argentina celebrates 30 years of democracy, much is still required to strengthen respect and tolerance. There have been other suchattacks recently against both Catholic and Methodist churches in Argentina. El Centro Simon Wiesenthal condenó el incidente provocado por extremistas católicos que intentaron suspender una conmemoración de Kristallnacht, la Noche de los Cristales Rotos, convocadaen la Catedral de Buenos Aires por el Arzobispado y B’nai Brith Argentina.

Mezclados entre los asistentes, integrantes de la Fraternidad San Pio X intentaron cancelar la ceremonia, pero fueron invitados a retirarse por el Arzobispo Mario Poli, quien, al retomarel oficio, manifestó: “hermanos judíos, esta es vuestra casa”.

“Era de esperar que seguidores del fallecido cismático Marcel Lefebvre, quien se opuso a la abolición por parte del Vaticano de la acusación acerca de la responsabilidad judía en laCrucifixión, y del negador del Holocausto Richard Williamson, trataran de continuar su campaña antisemita. Eligieron Kristallnacht, la ocasión más sensible, para manifestar su odio.Felicitamos a Monseñor Poli por haberlos resistido. Como sucesor en la diócesis de Buenos Aires del Cardenal Jorge Bergoglio, conocido hoy como el Papa Francisco, está siguiendo elejemplo de Su Santidad como un amigo del pueblo judío y un luchador contra la intolerancia”, destacó el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro SimonWiesenthal.

“En momentos en que Argentina celebra 30 años de democracia, vemos que todavía queda mucho camino por delante para fortalecer el respeto y la tolerancia. Este incidente se encuentra enlínea con otros ataques recientes contra iglesias católicas y metodistas en nuestro país.
