Wiesenthal Center Condemns Desecration of St. Ignatius Church in Buenos Aires: “Vandalism of any Religious Institution is a Threat to All Faiths”

In a letter to Buenos Aires Archbishop, Monsignor Mario Poli, Dr. Shimon Samuels, SWC Director for International Relations and Sergio Widder, SWC Director for Latin America condemned the desecrationof the St. Ignatius Church (pictured) by high school students from the neighboring Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires (CNBA), under the auspices of the Buenos Aires University.Located in historic “Enlightment Square” (“Manzana de las Luces”), the St. Ignatius Church and the CNBA are considered heritage ofBuenos Aires.

Pews were sprayed graffiti reading, “The only Church that illuminates is the one that is burning.”

“Acts of vandalism against any religious institution affects us all, irregardless of faith or none. We urge the Buenos AiresUniversity authorities to work with the school, to take disciplinary measures and implement tolerance-building programs. Our Latin American office is ready to share our materials andexperience in this area,” stated Samuels.

“As an alumnus of the delinquent school, I call on the Students Union to also condemn this attack and to immediately offer cooperationto clean away the graffiti desecrating the Church,” added Widder.

El Centro Wiesenthal condena la profanación de la iglesia de San Ignacio: “los actos vandálicos contra cualquier instituciónreligiosa son una amenaza a todas las fes”

En una carta al Arzobispo de Buenos Aires, Monseñor Mario Poli, el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Simon Wiesenthal) y Sergio Widder (Director para América Latina)condenaron la profanación de la iglesia de San Ignacio de Loyola por parte de un grupo de alumnos del vecino Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires (CNBA). La iglesia conforma el patrimoniohistórico porteño de la Manzana de las Luces.

Los agresores destruyeron bancos de madera y pintaron grafitis con la leyenda “la única Iglesia que ilumina es la quearde”.

“Todo acto vandálico contra cualquier institución religiosa nos afecta, con independencia de la fe o falta de fe. Urgimos a lasautoridades de la Universidad de Buenos Aires a que junto con las autoridades del CNBA tome las medidas disciplinarias que correspondan e implemente programas de promoción de latolerancia. Nuestra oficina latinoamericana se encuentra a disposición para compartir nuestros materiales y nuestra experiencia en esta materia”, señaló Samuels.

“Como exalumno, hago un llamamiento para que el Centro de Estudiantes condene este incidente y colabore inmediatamente con la limpiezade la iglesia”, agregó Widder.
