Wiesenthal Center Condemns Panama Governor’s Anti-Semitic Attack on Jewish Journalist

Calls on Panama-based Latin American Parliament (PARLATINO) to invoke its own declaration againstanti-Semitism

The Simon Wiesenthal Center condemned the verbal attack on Jewish journalist Flor Mizrachi Angel, labeled “That little Jewgirl fromthe Gestapo” by the Governor of Panama, Omaira Mayin Correa.

Mayin Correa’s insult, aired by KW Continente radio on June 17, came as a reaction to an article in which Mizrachi Angel accused thecountry’s government of taking preventive measures to “cover itself legally” from eventual corruption accusations.

In a letter to Deputy Elías Castillo (President of the Latin American Parliament – PARLATINO), Dr. Shimon Samuels, SWC Director forInternational Relations and Sergio Widder, SWC Director for Latin America, urged that he “Denounce the incident as a violation of the Declaration against Anti-Semitism, initiated by ourCenter and adopted by the PARLATINO during its 27th General Assembly, in December 2011” (see http://www.wiesenthal.com/site/apps/nlnet/content2.aspx?c=lsKWLbPJLnF&b=6478433&ct=11536051#.UcCm8fmsiSo).

“The Governor’s comments offend the memory of Jewish and other victims of the Nazis Gestapo and injure Panama, a long and devotedfriend of the Jewish people and the State of Israel,” noted Samuels.

“We call for a public apology from Governor Mayin Correa. Of course, any person can criticize an article if he or she considers thatthe information is inaccurate, but a racist attack is unacceptable,” added Widder.

“Headquartered in Panama, the PARLATINO cannot be indifferent to a local violation of its own core principles and recent directive,”concluded the Center officials.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center is the only Jewish NGO accredited to the PARLATINO.

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal repudia agresión verbal antisemita de parte de la Gobernadora de Panamá contra periodista judía –Solicita que el PARLATINO invoque su propia Declaración contra el Antisemitismo

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal condenó la agresión verbal antisemita contra la periodista Flor Mizrachi Angel, a quien la Gobernadora dePanamá, Omaira Mayin Correa calificó como “la judiíta de la Gestapo”.

Las palabras de Mayin Correa, pronunciadas a través de KW Continente el 17 de junio, constituyeron una reacción contra un artículo enel cual Mizrachi Angel acusó al gobierno de su país de tomar medidas para “blindarse” luego de su salida del poder, en 2014.

En una carta al Diputado Elías Castillo (Presidente del Parlamento Latinoamericano – PARLATINO), el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director deRelaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal) y Sergio Widder (Director para América Latina), le solicitaron que “denuncie este incidente como una violación a la Declaración contra elAntisemitismo, iniciada por nuestro Centro y adoptada por el PARLATINO durante su XXVII Asamblea, en diciembre de 2011” (ver http://www.wiesenthal.com/site/apps/nlnet/content2.aspx?c=lsKWLbPJLnF&b=6478433&ct=11536051#.UcCm8fmsiSo).

“Los comentarios de la Gobernadora ofenden la memoria de judíos y de otras víctimas de la Gestapo nazi, y lesionan a Panamá, untradicional y leal amigo del pueblo judío y del Estado de Israel”, señaló Samuels.

“Formulamos un llamamiento en favor de un pedido público de disculpas por parte de la Gobernadora Mayin Correa. Desde luego,cualquiera puede criticar un artículo periodístico si considera que está equivocado, pero un ataque racista es inaceptable”, agregó Widder.

“Siendo Panamá su sede, el Parlamento Latinoamericano (PARLATINO) no puede permanecer indiferente ante una violación local de susprincipios fundamentales y de una directiva reciente”, concluyeron los directivos del Centro.

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal es la única ONG judía acreditada ante el PARLATINO.
