Wiesenthal Center Condemns Statements by Syrian Minister During Visit to Argentina

The Simon Wiesenthal Center condemned statements by Syrian Minister of Information, Mohsen Bilal, during his recent visit to Argentina. In an interview published in Perfil magazine,Bilal labeled Israel as “a social disgrace in the Western World” (see http://www.diarioperfil.com.ar/edimp/0434/articulo.php?art=19284&ed=0434). The Syrian official alsoapplauded the appointment of Roberto Ahuad, who had called Israel “a terrorist state”, as the new Argentine Ambassador to Syria (see http://www.wiesenthal.com/site/apps/nlnet/content2.aspx?c=lsKWLbPJLnF&b=5711841&ct=7692825).

“The real ‘social disgrace’ that is threatening world peace is fundamentalist terrorism, which is supported by the Syrian government. Furthermore, Bilal should have explained to the Argentineauthorities why Damascus is sponsoring a criminal gang like Hizbollah, which was responsible for the AMIA Jewish Center massacre and the murder of 85 people in Buenos Aires,” stated Dr. ShimonSamuels, Director for International Relations of the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

“The Baath-led totalitarian Syrian regime violates all individual guarantees and human rights, and has protected one of the major Nazi war criminals, Alois Brunner, who was Adolf Eichmann’ssecond in command. The support given by Bilal to the newly appointed Argentine Ambassador to Syria reinforces the Center’s request that his appointment be reconsidered,” added Sergio Widder, theCenter’s Director for Latin America.
