Buenos Aires and Paris – A judicial resolution released through the media confirmed that Abdullah Omar, formerly known as Carlos Peralta – the murderer of Jewish merchant, David Fremd – is not fit to stand trial and will continue to be held in a Health Center rather than receive a prisonsentence.
Peralta, a convert to Islam influenced by social media, had crossed the street brandishing a knife and assassinated Fremd to the cryof Allahu Akhbar (God is great) in early 2016.
At that time, the Uruguayan authorities, both judicial and political, maintained that this was an isolated act stemming from anunbalanced mentality. The Wiesenthal Center, in a letter to the then Uruguayan President Tabaré Vázquez, stated that "The cry of Allahu Akbar ('Allah is great") by the murderer showssigns of the transplantation of Islamic terrorism from the Middle East to Latin America.”
“Acts carried out by lone wolves cannot be judicially evaluated by the same yardstick as a common crime. We doubt that a mentalhealth center can adequately treat and "cure" someone of such danger and prevent him from spreading these terrorist ideas to other inmates who are alleged to be mentally unbalanced," said Dr.Ariel Gelblung, Wiesenthal Center Director for Latin America.
Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations added: “Latin America may read in tomorrow's newspaper the judicialapplication of the non-accountability doctrine of European courts, closing cases of hate murder commited under the influence of drugs, alcohol or mental issues...The late Simon Wiesenthal, incases of mass murderers was often confronted by the accused suddenly developing 'heart failure' to stop the proceedings. Today, it is a judicial disease where trials of terrorists have beencurtailed,as they are assigned to clinics. When deemed 'cured,' they are released, often bent on recidivism."
"We urge the judicial and political authorities to condemn and prevent the 'revolving door justice' current in Europe that inevitablyendangers the general public," concluded the officials.
