Wiesenthal Center Demands Latin Bloc Remove Nicaraguan President of UN General Assembly

The Simon Wiesenthal Center demanded the Latin Bloc "GRULAC" censure and remove support for Nicaraguan Presidentof the United Nations General Assembly, Miguel D’Escoto Brockmann, after calling for a campaign of "boycott, sanctions and divestment" against the State of Israel, calling her an"Apartheid state and accusing her of "crucifying our Palestinian brothers and sisters". The comments were made at the UN’s International Day of Solidarity with the PalestinianPeople.

"The repetition of the apartheid canard by the President of the UN General Assembly further tarnishes the imageof the United Nations and signals Israelis they can never expect to be treated fairly at the UN", said Rabbi Abraham Cooper, SWC associate dean.

In a letter to Foreign Affairs Ministers of Chile, Alejandro Foxley (current President of the GRULAC – LatinAmerican and Caribbean Group) and of Colombia, Jaime Bermúdez (GRULAC President from December 1, 2008), Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director for International Relations of the WiesenthalCenter) and Sergio Widder (Latin American Representative), demanded that the bloc withdraw their current representative as President of the UN General Assembly.

The letter stated that "D’Escoto Brockmann’s statements, promoting anti-Semitism and the destruction of aMember-State of the United Nations, are an abuse of the honorable position that he holds".

"As a Catholic priest, D’Escoto Brockmann should well know the connection between his words and the charges ofdeicide against the Jewish people, which were finally refuted by Vatican II", noted Samuels.

"We urge you, as current and incoming Presidents of the GRULAC, to withdraw Nicaragua as the bloc’srepresentative as President of the General Assembly".

"To do otherwise would endorse the genocidal intent inherent in the declarations of GRULAC’s representative",concluded Widder.
