Wiesenthal Center Denounces Venezuelan Anti-Semitic Defamation of New Argentine Foreign Minister

The Simon Wiesenthal Center has discovered and denounced antisemitic defamation of newly appointed Argentine Foreign Minister, Héctor Timerman on a pro-Chávez Venezuelan website.

The site “Aporrea” has posted an article entitled “A Zionist at the Argentine Foreign Affairs Ministry”.

Therein, a group calling itself The Union of Militants for Socialism confusedly charges Timerman with “wangling Argentine entry into the G-20”; that “the White House is preparing amilitary attack against Iran, using Israel”, concluding: “that this was what was behind the resignation of [former F.A. Minister Jorge] Taiana and the appointment of a declared Zionistwho operates under remote control from the State Department” (http://www.aporrea.org/internacionales/a102656.html)

“Once again, a pro-Chavez gang reverts to its conspiracy theory default mode: the Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” stated Dr. Shimon Samuels, the Center’s Director for InternationalRelations, adding: “The subtext is Argentina’s fortitude in demanding extradition of the 7 Iranian terrorists implicated in the AMIA atrocity – an anathema for the Caracas-TehranAxis.”

“This Venezuelan attempt to disqualify Timerman for being a Jew is offensive to the Argentine authorities. Public official’s appointments in democratic Argentina has more to do withcompetence and merit, unrelated to religious or ethnic affiliation. Not so the procedure in Chavez’ Venezuela”, added Sergio Widder, Director for Latin America.
“Argentina should protest the defamation by demanding full respect for the 2008 Tripartite Declaration Against Racism, Religious Intolerance, Religious Discrimination and RelatedIntolerance comprising Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela,” urged the Center.

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal expuso y denunció un ataque antisemita contra el nuevo Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de Argentina, Héctor Timerman, publicado en un artículo en el sitio webvenezolano chavista “Aporrea”. Bajo el título “Un sionista en la Cancillería argentina”, un grupo denominado Unión de Militantes por el Socialismo acusa a Timerman de “impulsar yarticular la incorporación de Argentina al G-20”; el artículo refiere que “la Casa Blanca prepara un ataque militar contra Irán utilizando en la primera fase a Israel”, y concluye que“eso es lo que está detrás de la renuncia de[l ex – Canciller Jorge] Taiana y la asunción de un sionista declarado, teledirigido por el Departamento de Estado” (verhttp://www.aporrea.org/internacionales/a102656.html).

“Una vez más, los pandilleros chavistas retornan a sus teorías conspirativas habituales: los Protocolos de los Sabios de Sion”, señaló el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de RelacionesInternacionales del Centro Simon Wiesenthal; y agregó que “el subtexto es que la firmeza argentina para exigir la extradición de los siete terroristas iraníes implicados en la atrocidadde la AMIA constituye un anatema para el eje Caracas-Teherán”.
