"Football must serve as a bridge to unite and not an excuse to divide"
The Simon Wiesenthal Center awarded Oscar Romero, a 23-year-old Paraguayan football player in the prestigious Argentine RacingClub.
During a match against Bolivar of Bolivia for the Libertadores Cup on February 24, Racing’s fans began chanting racist epithets againstBolivians and Paraguayans.
Romero faced the fans, signaling a NO and with his fingers on his lips, called for silence. The fans turn the insults into almost unanimousAPPLAUSE "Romeeero, Romeeero ...".
After the game, he described his pain as a Paraguayan and the abuse against others, like himself victims of hate, who had left their countriesseeking a better future to contribute their energy and talent to Argentina.
The Simon Wiesenthal Center in Europe and Latin America has long been involved in combatting hate on the pitch.
"We launched the '11 Points Against Racism in Football' initiative at the Latin American Parliament (PARLATINO) in Panama, based on a EuropeanParliament resolution. Our work with UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) is now being replicated with the support of AFA (Argentine Football Association) and the National Associationof Professional Football-AFNP of Chile,” stated the Center's Director for International Relations, Dr. Shimon Samuels.
Dr. Ariel Gelblung, the Center´s Representative for Latin America said: "Given that football should be a bridge between nations and not anexcuse to divide them, anti-racist activists such as Oscar Romero must be iconized and supported throughout Latin America with concrete governmental measures against discrimination and racism infootball"

El Centro Wiesenthal destacó la actitud contra la xenofobia de Óscar Romero
“El futbol debe servir de puente para unir y no de excusa para dividir”
El Centro Simon Wiesenthal premió ayer al Sr. Óscar Romero, 23 años, nacionalidad paraguaya, jugador del Racing Club de Avellaneda (Argentina)y portador de un 10 en su espalda.
Durante el partido contra el Bolívar de Bolivia por la Copa Libertadores de América el pasado miércoles 24 de febrero, la hinchada de Racingcomenzó con cánticos insultantes contra bolivianos y paraguayos: "Son todos bolivianos, paraguayos, que sólo sirven para botonear…"
El Sr. Romero encaró a sus hinchas haciendo un NO con los dedos y poniendo además el índice en los labios pidió silencio, transformando losinsultos en un coro de aprobación: “Romeeero, Romeeero…”. En sus declaraciones luego del partido, manifestó que como paraguayo se había sentido dolido por la discriminación contra gente honestaque, como él, deja su país buscando un mejor futuro.
El Centro Simon Wiesenthal es pionero en el campo de la lucha contra la discriminación, el racismo y la xenofobia en elfútbol.
"Lanzamos la iniciativa de 11 puntos contra el racismo en el fútbol en el Parlamento Latinoamericano (Parlatino), en Panamá, basados en unaresolución del Parlamento Europeo. Nuestro trabajo con UEFA (Unión Europea de Asociaciones de Fútbol) está siendo replicada con el apoyo de AFA (Asociación Argentina de Fútbol) y la AsociaciónNacional de Fútbol Profesional- AFNP de Chile" dijo el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro.
El Dr. Ariel Gelblung, Representante para América Latina del Centro sostuvo que: “dado que el fútbol debe servir de puente entre las nacionesy no de excusa para dividirlas, actitudes comprometidas como las del Sr. Romero merecen distinguirse, premiarse y difundirse con medidas gubernamentales concretas contra la discriminación y elracismo en el fútbol."
