The Simon Wiesenthal Center today praised the decision by the Obama Administration to not participate in September’s United Nations commemoration of its infamous World Conference AgainstRacism that was held in Durban, South Africa in September, 2001. 
While the goal of the original conference was toaddress discrimination, xenophobia and bigotry, attacks against Israel quickly became the main focus, so much so that the country’s delegation walked out in protest, joined by the United States.The current administration has continued to hold that stance. In a letter that was distributed to Jewish leaders, the Wiesenthal Center included, the White House said that the outcome of theDurban Conference included, “…such ugly displays of intolerance and anti-Semitism and we don’t want to see that commemorated.”
“We are gratified by President Obama’s decision to boycott the so-called ‘Durban III’ and we hope all member states of the European Union and democracies the Americas and Asia will followthe U.S. and Canada’s lead,” said Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Wiesenthal Center. “The battle against racism and hate is too important to leave to themanipulations of despots and dictators,” he concluded.
Rabbi Cooper and Dr. Shimon Samuels, the Center’s Director for International Relations, attended the 2001 Durban conference and served as spokesmen for Jewish NGOs protesting the conference’santi-Semitic developments. The Center was also one of the most vocal of the groups protesting the invitation to have Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad give the keynote at the opening of DurbanII last year at UN Headquarters in Geneva.

El Centro Wiesenthal elogia la decisión de la Casa Blanca de retirarse de la conmemoración de la infame Conferencia de Durban
El Centro Simon Wiesenthal elogió la decisión de la administración Obama de no participar en la conmemoración prevista para septiembre próximo, en las Naciones Unidas, de la infame ConferenciaMundial contra el Racismo, que tuvo lugar en Durban, Sudáfrica, en septiembre de 2001.
Aunque el objetivo original de la Conferencia había sido abordar la discriminación, la xenofobia y la intolerancia, rápidamente los ataques contra Israel se convirtieron en el foco principal. Ladelegación israelí se retiró, en protesta; lo mismo hizo Estados Unidos. La actual administración ha mantenido esa posición. En una carta distribuida a organizaciones líderes de la comunidadjudía, entre ellas el Centro Wiesenthal, la Casa Blanca señaló que las conclusiones de la Conferencia de Durban incluyeron “desagradables muestras de intolerancia y antisemitismo, y no deseamosver que se conmemore eso”.
“Nos gratifica la decisión del presidente Obama de retirarse de la reunión llamada ‘Durban III’ y esperamos que todos los Estados miembros de de la Unión Europea y las democracias de las Américasy Asia sigan los pasos de Estados Unidos y Canadá”, señaló el rabino Abraham Cooper, Decano Adjunto del Centro Wiesenthal. “La batalla contra el racismo es demasiado importante como para dejarlaa merced de las manipulaciones de déspotas y dictadores”, concluyó.
El rabino Abraham Cooper y el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal), presentes en la Conferencia de Durban en 2001, ocuparon el rol de voceros de lasprotestas de las Organizaciones No Gubernamentales judías ante los episodios antisemitas que allí se produjeron. El Centro fue también una de las instituciones más activas en protestar contra lainvitación al presidente iraní Mahmoud Ahmadinejad para que formulara el discurso de apertura de la reunión de “Durban II” en la sede de las Naciones Unidas en Ginebra, en 2009.
