Wiesenthal Center Proposes Special Investigation Unit into 1992 Israeli Embassy Bombing

“This Initiative Would Help to Demolish Allegations of Argentine Negotiations with Iran on Closing ExtraditionDemand”

The Wiesenthal Centre expressed horror at reported leaks to Buenos Aires-based magazine, Perfil, that Argentine officials, via Syria, had offered an end to investigations into the 1992attack against the Israeli Embassy and the 1994 assault on the AMIA Jewish Centre. The article says that legal peace would be granted to Iran in exchange for significant business deals.

Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center) and Sergio Widder (Latin American Director) stated that Perfil’s charges contradict Argentine publicdemands to the UN General Assembly for assistance in extraditing the Iranians implicated in both atrocities.

“This is a serious accusation that demands the publication by Perfil of the documents that back up its allegations. The Wiesenthal Center has requested a copy of those documents fromPerfil. Meanwhile, the Argentine longstanding commitment to justice regarding the attacks against the Israeli Embassy and the AMIA cannot be subject to bargaining, neither today, nor inthe future,” said Samuels.

“On the eve of Foreign Minister Timerman’s official visit to Israel, scheduled for April, we urge the Argentine government to establish a Special Investigation Unit into the Israeli Embassyattack, modeled on the structure headed by AMIA Prosecutor Alberto Nisman, that would help to dismiss charges that can only serve to grant impunity to Iran’s sponsorship of terror,” addedWidder.

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal se mostró alarmado por un artículo publicado el 26 de marzo en el diario argentino Perfil, donde se sostiene que el gobierno argentino habría ofrecido a Irán, a travésde Siria, paralizar las investigaciones sobre los ataques terroristas contra la Embajada de Israel en Argentina y contra la AMIA. El artículo agrega que en virtud de tal acuerdo, se ofreceríafrenar las causas a cambio del fortalecimiento de relaciones comerciales (http://www.diarioperfil.com.ar/edimp/0558/articulo.php?art=27932&ed=0558).

“Esta acusación es muy seria y es necesario que Perfil publique los documentos que respaldan sus dichos. El Centro Wiesenthal ya ha solicitado a Perfil una copia de esos documentos. Entretanto,el compromiso que hace tiempo sostiene Argentina para que se haga justicia en relación con los ataques contra la embajada de Israel y la AMIA no puede ser materia de negociación ni ahora ni en elfuturo”, señaló Samuels.

“En vísperas de la visita oficial del Canciller Timerman a Israel, en abril próximo, urgimos al gobierno argentino a establecer una Unidad Especial de Investigación del atentado contra laEmbajada de Israel, siguiendo el modelo de la estructura a cargo del fiscal Alberto Nisman, que contribuiría a demoler acusaciones que sólo pueden servir para otorgar impunidad al patrocinio deIrán hacia el terrorismo”, agregó Widder.
