Wiesenthal Center Protests Icelandic Citizenship Granted to Holocaust Denier Bobby Fisher

The Simon Wiesenthal Center today protested the granting of Icelandic citizenship to former world chess championBobby Fisher, noting that his Holocaust denial and notoriously anti-Semitic views were in violation of Icelandic law.

In a statement issued today in Jerusalem, the Center’s Israel director Dr. Efraim Zuroff called upon the Icelandicauthorities to rescind their decision, noting that since Fisher’s arrival in the country he has already violated Icelandic law which forbids incitement based on "nationality, color, race, religion or sexual orientation."

According to Zuroff:

"All one had to do is listen to Fisher’s outrageously anti-Semitic comments at his Friday news conference torealize that Iceland had admitted a world class bigot who will bring no honor to his new home. In this regard, Iceland which offered a haven for over four decades to Estonian Naziwar criminal Edvald Hinriksson (Evald Mikson) is continuing its tradition of serving as a haven for notorious anti-Semites."
