Wiesenthal Center Slams Venezuelan Authorities on Mob Violence against Caracas Synagogue: “Chávez’ Proactive Support for Hamas, Hizbollah and Iran Conciously Incites Against Jews Everywhere”

In wake of the Israel-Hamas cease-fire, the Maripérez Synagogue in Caracas, first desecrated in January, 2009, was again targeted. Anenraged mob chanted “Jews are murderers, damn Jews, stop killing innocent people”, anti-Israeli slogans, and launching firecrackers.

“One attack can be by local anti-Semites, recidivism smacks of government indifference, incitement or, even worse, policy. Where wasthe police protection promised by Chavez? The circumstances are too reminiscent of Hitler’s Kristallnacht pogrom of November 1938,” argued SWC Director forInternational Relations, Dr. Shimon Samuels.

“Anti-Semitic incidents in Chavez’ Venezuela were already labeled as human rights abuses by the OAS’ Inter-American Commission onHuman Rights (www.cidh.oas.org/pdf%20files/VENEZUELA%202009%20ENG.pdf – paragraphs 784-786). The current Maripérez Synagogue behooves the Organization of American States to intervene in ensuring a fullinvestigation and prosecution of those responsible."

La sinagoga de Maripérez en Caracas (profanada en enero de 2009) fue agredida el 22 de noviembre, luego del acuerdo de cese del fuego entre Israel y Hamas. Los manifestantes entonaronconsignas tales como “judíos asesinos, judíos malditos, dejen de matar gente inocente”, cánticos contra el Estado de Israel, y lanzaron pirotecnia contra el predio deledificio.

“Un ataque puede ser producto del antisemitismo local, la reincidencia pone en evidencia la indiferencia, incitación o, peor aún,política gubernamental. ¿Dónde estaba la protección policial prometida por Chávez? Las circunstancias remiten demasiado al pogromo hitleriano de la Kristallnacht en noviembre de 1938”,expresó el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal).

“Los ataques antisemitas en la Venezuela de Chávez fueron señalados como abusos contra los derechos humanos por la ComisiónInteramericana de Derechos Humanos de la OEA (www.cidh.org/pdf%20files/VENEZUELA.2009.ESP.pdf - parágrafos 784–786). Esta nueva agresión debe comprometer a la OEA a intervenir para aseguraruna investigación seria y el procesamiento de los responsables. Nuestro Centro se solidariza con la comunidad judía de Venezuela y seguirá monitoreando una situación que amenaza a losjudíos a lo largo de Latinoamérica”, agregó Sergio Widder (Director para America Latina del Centro).

“El apoyo declarado de Chávez a Hamas, Hezbollah e Irán es una activa incitación al odio contra los judíos en cualquier lugar. La‘Declaración contra el Antisemitismo’ formulada por el Centro Wiesenthal y adoptada por el Parlamento Latinoamericano (PARLATINO), con el apoyo de la delegación parlamentaria de Venezuela,obliga moralmente a su gobierno a una política de tolerancia cero para el odio antijudío”, concluyeron Samuels y Widder.
