Wiesenthal Center Statement on Indictment of Nazi Death Camp Guard

Samuel Kunz, Number 3 on the Center’s “Most Wanted” list, was indicted by Germany for participation in the murders of over 430,000Jews at the Belzec death camp.

“We’re pleased that Kunz was indicted and that it’s possible to bring Nazi perpetrators to justice years after their crimes werecommitted,” said Dr. Efraim Zuroff, the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s chief Nazi hunter. “This case is important, because it will shed light on Belzec, though little known, was where hundredsof thousands of Jews were murdered and very few survived,” he added.

“The indictment reflects recent changes in the German prosecution policy, which has significantly increased the number of suspects brought to justice, changes that the Wiesenthal Centerhas long pushed for,” Dr. Zuroff added.

Zuroff also said that special credit should be given to the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Special Investigations and its Director Eli Rosenbaum, whose investigations inconnection with the trial of John Demjanjuk yielded crucial information on Kunz.
