The Simon Wiesenthal Center urged the Argentine Football Association (AFA) authorities to penalize Chacarita Juniors Soccer Club after fanschanted anti-Semitic slogans during a match against Atlanta Soccer Club, on March 11, 2012.
Though not aJewish club, Atlanta was founded in 1904 in a neighborhood where early Jewish immigrants settled in Buenos Aires (Villa Crespo), and still has a large Jewish following.
In a letter to the Presidents of AFA’s Executive Committee, Julio Grondona, and its Disciplinary Court, Fernando Mitjans, Dr. Shimon Samuels (the Wiesenthal Center’s Director forInternational Relations) and Sergio Widder (Director for Latin America) noted that “during the match, Chacarita´s fans repeatedly sang: “Chaca is coming along the road, killingthe Jews to make soap” (see video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=aOdKd0sphss).
“There are no excuses for such abhorrent behavior and the use of Holocaust imagery of the death camps, where the Nazis proposed to melt Jewish fat for the production of soap. Wemet with AFA’s President Grondona, who promised us zero tolerance for racism on the football terraces. We now expect him to show an exemplary 'Red Flag' to Chacarita Juniors,”stated Samuels.
“This kind of incident is actionable under AFA’s official regulations, and there can be no pretexts for inaction. What happened violates the spirit of fellowship in sports. Weoffer AFA our expertise to work with delinquent cubs to sensitize fans to the enormity of such hate chants that incite to violence,” added Widder.

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal urgió a las autoridades de la Asociación del Fútbol Argentino (AFA) que sancione al club Chacarita Juniors debido a los cánticos antisemitas entonados porsus simpatizantes el 11 de marzo de 2012, durante el partido contra el club Atlanta.
En una carta alpresidente del Comité Ejecutivo de la AFA, Julio Grondona, y al presidente de su Tribunal de Disciplina, Fernando Mitjans, el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director de RelacionesInternacionales del Centro Wiesenthal) y Sergio Widder (Director para América Latina) expusieron que “durante el partido de fútbol de la categoría Primera B Nacional, entre losclubes Atlanta y Chacarita Juniors, los simpatizantes de éste último entonaron cánticos antisemitas: ‘Ahí viene Chaca por el callejón / matando judíos para hacer jabón’” (videoadjunto, http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=aOdKd0sphss).
“No hay excusas para un comportamiento tan abominable ni para las alusiones al Holocausto y los los campos de exterminio. Nos hemos reunido en el pasado con el presidente de la AFA,Grondona, quien nos prometió ‘tolerancia cero’ para las expresiones racistas en estadios de fútbol. Esperamos que ahora exhiba una ‘bandera roja’ ejemplar a Chacarita Juniors”,señaló Samuels.
“Este tipo de incidentes está contemplado en el reglamento oficial de la AFA y por lo tanto no hay pretextos para la inacción. Lo ocurrido ofende el espíritu de confraternidaddeportiva. Ofrecemos a la AFA nuestra experiencia para enfrentar la violencia y sensibilizar a los simpatizantes acerca de la desmesura de los cantos que incitan al odio”, agregóWidder.
