Wiesenthal Center to Twitter in Latin America and Worldwide: "Adopt Filters to Block out Hate or Share Responsability for Globalization of Violence"

Following lengthy negotiations with Twitter United States, led by Rabbi AbrahamCooper, SWC Associate Dean, Latin American Representative, Dr. Ariel Gelblung and Director for International Relations, Dr.Shimon Samuels, are appealing to Twitter in their respectiveregions.

The catalyst was the antisemitic taunting, last week in Bariloche, Argentina, of aBuenos Aires Jewish ORT School group, by Lanus German School students parading as Adolf Hitler. Degenerating into violence, the encounter triggered a wave of hate-Tweets of extreme virulence provoking further incitement.

The Center urged Twitter Argentina to, "Review its policies in Latin America, and to adopt filters to eliminate hate speech and block thoseusers who abuse these platforms."

This is not a question of limiting freedom of expression.

"The rise of Nazism was facilitated by Goebbels propaganda, Streicher's newspapers, and Riefenstahl's films. Contemporary social networking serves as a vector for newplatforms of hate incitement, " claimed Samuels.

"Most media remains passive in the face of spreading hate speech under the pretextof defending freedom of expression. Paradoxically, they may become victims of such agitation," argued Gelblung.

"Twitter in Latin America and worldwide must adopt filters to block out hate orthey must share the responsibility for the globalization of ensuing violence," concluded the officials.

En coincidencia con las largas negociaciones con Twitter-Estados Unidos lideradaspor Rabbi Abraham Cooper, Decano Asociado; el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales y el Dr. ArielGelblung, Representante para América Latina del Centro Simon Wiesenthal, están interpelando a Twitter en sus respectivas regiones.

El catalizador fue la provocación antisemita realizada la semana pasada en Bariloche ante un grupo de estudiantes de la escuela judía ORT de Buenos Aires por un grupo dela Escuela Alemana de Lanús disfrazados de Adolf Hitler. El violento encuentro disparó una oleada de tweets de odio deextrema virulencia ocasionando una provocación mayor aún .

El Centro instó a Twitter Argentina a “*rever sus políticas en América Latina yque -como lo hizo en Europa-, adopte filtros para eliminar los discursos de odio y bloquear a aquellos usuarios que abusen desus plataformas*”

Esto no es cuestión de limitar la libertad de expresión.
