Wiesenthal Center to Argentine Foreign Minister: “Reject Iranian Request To Confer At UN General Assembly”

“No dialogue between Argentina and Iran can be valid until justice is obtained for the victims of the AMIA bombing.What common political agenda can exist between two countries with diametrically opposed visions of human rights and global responsibility?”

In a letter to Argentine Foreign Minister Hector Timerman (pictured center at an earlier meeting with SWC Latin AmericanDirector, Sergio Widder and SWC Associate Dean, Rabbi Abraham Cooper), the Wiesenthal Center manifested its skepticism regarding the request from his Iranian counterpart, AliAkbar Salehi, to meet during the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York.

Dr.Shimon Samuels, SWC Director for International Relations and Sergio Widder argued, “Argentina has implicated the Iranian regime in the terrorist attack of 18 July 1994, againstthe AMIA Jewish Center in Buenos Aires. Until the present, Iran has rejected compliance with the Argentine arrest warrants endorsed by INTERPOL against eight Iranian citizens,among them ex-President Hashemi Rafsanjani, ex-Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati and the current Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi.”

“Iran has unceasingly expressed its intention to ‘wipe the State of Israel off the map’, and is pursuing a nuclear programwith this objective. History has shown that whoever has aimed to exterminate the Jews has never stopped at rhetoric. Argentina, on the other hand, has shown nuclear responsibilityand, as an incoming Non-Permanent Security Council Member for 2013-2014, is obliged to act as a guardian of world peace and a guarantor of the UN sanctions regime imposed uponTehran,” stated Samuels.

“What common political agenda can exist between two countries with diametrically opposed visions of human rights? Argentinahas legalized gay marriage, whereas Iran treats homosexuality as a target of State repression. Argentina has extensive protection of women’s rights, while Iran stones womenaccused of ‘adultery’. Argentina is an active member of the International Task Force for Holocaust Education, while the Iranian President repeatedly denies the Nazi genocide,”added Widder.

“No dialogue between Argentina and Iran can be valid until justice is obtained for the victims of the AMIA bombing and Iran –in violation of the UN Charter - abandons its genocidal nuclear program targeting Israel, a State friendly to Argentina,” concluded Samuels and Widder.

Carta del Centro Wiesenthal al Canciller Timerman: “No puede haber un diálogo válido entre Argentina e Irán Hasta QueHaya Justicia en la causa AMIA”

“¿Qué agenda política en común puede haber entre dos países convisiones tan opuestas acerca de los derechos humanos y civiles”

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal envió una carta al Canciller argentino, Héctor Timerman, (centro de la foto en una reunión anteriorcon SWC latinoamericano Director, Sergio Widder y SWC Associate Dean, el rabino Abraham Cooper) manifestando su escepticismo en relación con el pedido por parte de su contraparteiraní, Ali Akbar Salehi, para mantener un encuentro en el marco de la próxima Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas en Nueva York.

Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal) y Sergio Widder(Director para América Latina) señalaron en la carta que “la justicia argentina ha vinculado al régimen iraní con el ataque terrorista contra la AMIA, perpetrado el 18 de julio de1994 en Buenos Aires. Hasta el día de hoy, Irán se niega a cumplir con las órdenes de captura refrendadas por INTERPOL contra ocho ciudadanos de ese país, entre quienes seencuentran el expresidente Hashemi Rafsanjani, el excanciller Ali Akbar Velayati y el actual ministro de Defensa, Ahmad Vahidi”.

“Irán ha expresado muchas veces su intención de ‘borrar del mapa’ al Estado de Israel, y tiene en marcha un programa nuclearcon fines bélicos. La historia nos ha enseñado que cuando un individuo con poder manifestó su intención de exterminar a los judíos, hizo todo lo posible para poder cumplir con suobjetivo. Argentina es un país que se destaca por mantener un programa nuclear responsable, y como futuro Miembro No Permanente del Consejo de Seguridad para el período 2013-2014,tiene la obligación ineludible de actuar a favor de la paz mundial y garantizar el cumplimiento del régimen de sanciones de las Naciones Unidas impuesto a Teherán”, señalóSamuels.

“¿Cuál sería la agenda política común entre Cancilleres de países que tienen posiciones diametralmente opuestas en asuntosligados a la defensa de los derechos humanos y civiles? Argentina ha consagrado la Ley de Matrimonio Igualitario, en Irán la homosexualidad es considerada una ‘aberración’ quedebe ser reprimida desde el Estado. El gobierno argentino está promoviendo una reforma del Código Civil que excluye de la normativa el ‘deber de fidelidad’ entre cónyuges,preservando tales cuestiones al ámbito de la vida privada; por el contrario, el régimen de Teheran considera que las mujeres ‘adúlteras’ merecen ser lapidadas. Argentina es elúnico país de América Latina que integra la International Task Force for Holocaust Education (el Grupo de Cooperación Internacional para la Educación sobre el Holocausto),mientras que el presidente iraní niega el genocidio cometido por los nazis”, agregó Widder.

“No puede haber un diálogo válido entre Argentina e Irán hasta que se haga justicia en la causa AMIA y hasta que Irán abandonesu programa nuclear genocida –que viola la Carta de las Naciones Unidas- que tiene como objetivo atacar a Israel, un Estado amigo de la República Argentina”, concluyeron Samuels yWidder.
