Wiesenthal Center urges Paraguay to investigate Hizbollah-related activities in Ciudad del Este

The Simon Wiesenthal Center is urging the government of Paraguay to launch an official ininvestigation into Hizbollah- related activities in Ciudad del Este, at the Tri-Border area bordering Argentina and Brazil.

In a letter to Interior Minister Rogelio Benítez Vargas, Shimon Samuels (Director for International Relations of theWiesenthal Center) and Sergio Widder (Latin American Representative) refered to an NBC – Telemundo report , which includes testimony by Mustafa Khalil Meri, who openly supports theterrorist group Hizbollah, and threatens to carry out violent actions, as well another individual, identified as the person in charge of a mosque in Ciudad del Este, who stated that“Shiite mosques have the moral obligation to finance Hizbollah.”

“Beyond its criminal activities in the Middle East, Hizbollah was accused as the main responsible for the terroristattacks against the Israeli Embassy and the AMIA Jewish Community Center in Buenos Aires (1992 and 1994, respectively), and permissiveness towards any action aimed at strengthening thatgroup is against all regional cooperation policies on terrorism,” said Samuels and Widder.

“We urge the Paraguayan government to immediately investigate this denounces, to identify those who are supportingHizbollah from the region, and to submit them to the appropriate courts, in order to prevent future tragedies and to eradicate any terrorist enclave in the Southern Cone,” theyconcluded.

El Centro Wiesenthal urge a Paraguay a investigar actividades de apoyo a Hezbollah desde Ciudad delEste

El Centro Wiesenthal solicitó al Ministro del Interior de Paraguay, Rogelio Benítez Vargas, a que el gobierno de esepaís investigue las denuncias acerca de actividades de apoyo al grupo terrorista Hezbollah desde Ciudad del Este, en la zona de la Triple Frontera donde ese país limita con Argentina yBrasil.

En una carta al Ministro Benítez Vargas, Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del CentroWiesenthal) y Sergio Widder (Representante para América Latina) citaron un informe periodístico de la cadena NBC – Telemundo, en el cual se ofrecen los testimonios de un individuo llamadoMustafa Khalil Meri, quien se manifiesta simpatizante con Hezbollah y amenaza con llevar adelante acciones violentas, así como el de otra persona (identificado como quien se encuentra acargo de una mezquita en Ciudad del Este), quien declaró que las mezquitas chiitas “tienen la obligación” de financiar a Hezbollah.

“Además de la actividad criminal que despliega en Medio Oriente, Hezbollah ha sido señalado como el principalresponsable por los atentados terroristas contra la Embajada de Israel y la sede de la AMIA en Buenos Aires (1992 y 1994, respectivamente), y la permisividad hacia cualquier accióndirigida a fortalecer a esa organización se encuentra en oposición con las políticas regionales de cooperación contra el terrorismo”, señalaron Samuels y Widder.

“Urgimos al gobierno de Paraguay a llevar adelante una investigación inmediata con vistas a poner fin a este tipode actividades, a individualizar a los responsables de brindar apoyo desde la región a grupos terroristas internacionales, y a someterlos a la justicia de modo de prevenir futurastragedias y para erradicar todo vestigio de actividad terrorista en el Cono Sur”, concluyeron.
