Wiesenthal Center Views Brasilia Prepcom as "A Lost Opportunity on the Road to Durban II"

"The Final Document of the Regional Conference forLatin America and the Caribbean Preparatory to the Durban Review Conference is a great disappointment," stated the Centre’sDirector for International Relations, Dr. Shimon Samuels.

Samuels added: "Latin America and Europe are the principal bulwarks, in the United Nation’s system, that can contain a repetition of the obsessive singling out of the State ofIsrael and the maniacal antisemitism that marked Durban 2001, but here, in Brasilia , the Americas have failed to stand up and be counted."

Sergio Widder , the Centre’s Latin American Representative explained that "the absence of any mention of the Jews among the targets of racism, nor even of the contemporary andresurgent scourge of antisemitism in the final document, has left theBrasilia initiative an empty exercise".

The Wiesenthal Centre had publicly and privately called for the inclusion of antisemitism (see Dr. Samuels’ speech to the Assembly of 18 June, document and photo link).

This appeal was openly supported by even the UN’s Rapporteur on Racism, Doudou Diene, and, in the closed Drafting Committee, by several member states, without avail.

"The rejection of concern for antisemitism, and the Jews as victims of racism, was a form of denial that bodes ill and marked the Brasilia Prepcom as a lost opportunity on theroad to Durban II," sadly concluded the Centre’s officials.

"El Documento Final de la Conferencia Regional para América Latina y el Caribe Preparatoria a la Conferencia de Examen de Durban es una gran desilusión", manifestó el Director deRelaciones Internacionales del Centro, Dr. Shimon Samuels.

Samuels agregó que "América Latina y Europa constituyen el principal baluarte, dentro del sistema de las Naciones Unidas, que puede evitar una repetición del señalamiento obsesivocontra el Estado de Israel y el antisemitismo maníaco característicos de Durban en 2001; pero aquí, en Brasilia, las Américas han abandonado su oportunidad para pronunciarse."

Sergio Widder, el Representante para América Latina del Centro, explicó que "la ausencia de cualquier mención acerca de los judíos entre los grupos vulnerables al racismo, nisiquiera del resurgimiento contemporáneo del flagelo del antisemitismo, han convertido la iniciativa de Brasilia en un ejercicio vacío."

El Centro Wiesenthal ha convocado pública y privadamente para que se incluyera el antisemitismo (ver el discurso de la presentación del Dr. Samuels ante la Conferencia el 18 dejunio y la fotografía en el link).

Esta Convocatoria fue abiertamente apoyada aún por el Relator Especial de Naciones Unidas sobre Racismo, Doudou Diene, y, en el Comité de Redacción, por varios estados miembros,sin resultados.

"El rechazo a la preocupación por el antisemitismo y por los judíos como víctimas del racismo fue una forma de negación que trae malos presagios y señala a la ConferenciaPreparatoria de Brasilia como una oportunidad perdida en el camino hacia Durban II," concluyeron con pesar los representantes del Centro.
