Wiesenthal Centre to Spanish Foreign Minister: “You Ignore Violent Attack on Peace-Makers Conference in Madrid While Meeting with Palestinian Foreign Minister.”

PARIS - In a letter to Spanish Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Margarita Robles Fernández, the Simon WiesenthalCentre Director for International Relations, Dr. Shimon Samuels, noted that ” the daybefore your meeting with the Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Riad Malki, a conference of Palestinian Muslim and Israeli Jewish intellectuals, members of ‘Islas de la Paz’ (Islands of Peace), took place down the road from your Ministry, at the Intercontinental Hotel Madrid.”

The letter argued that “both you, Madam Minister, and Mr. Malki should have publicly blessed a meeting that aims at presenting asolution to the Middle East conflict, based on coexistence and economic cooperation.”

Samuels suggested that, “Far worse than your silence, was the report of violence in the conference hall against the twoorganizers:

- ACOM (Acción y Comunicación en Oriente Medio / Action and Communication in the Middle East), particularly active in containingBDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) - an antisemitic campaign against Israel, redolent of the‘Do Not Buy From the Jews’ of Nazi Germany.

- El Club de los Viernes (the Friday Club), for the defence of civil liberties.

“Both reported on the physical attack by Podemos (reportedly, a friend of Iran), Izquierda Unida (United Left) and members of thePFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine) - listed as a terrorist group by the European Union - responsible for aircraft hijacking and the murder of Jewish targets across Europe since1968.”

The Centre was horrified at “the death threats by theassailants against the Palestinian peacemaker, Imam Nasr Al-Tamimi.”

“Madam Minister, I was present at the 1991 Madrid Peace Conference, viewed by some as ‘a historic breakthrough in Arab-Israeli diplomacy,’ despite its failures... Twenty-eight years later, it is apparent that the Spanish Government has nointerest in a peace process, even when it takes place and is violently abused on Spanish soil,” declared Samuels.

Our Centre stands in solidarity with ACOM and the FridayClub, in their efforts for peace, he concluded.
