As Evacuated Synagogues Burn In Gaza, Abbas Misses Opportunity To Demonstrate Respect And Tolerance For Another Religion

AS EVACUATED SYNAGOGUES BURN IN GAZA, ABBAS MISSES OPPORTUNITY TO DEMONSTRATE RESPECT AND TOLERANCE FOR ANOTHERRELIGION

The Simon Wiesenthal Center condemned today’s torching of the former synagogues in Gaza by Palestinians after Israel’swithdrawal from the Gaza strip.

"By failing to protect the holy sites, Mahmoud Abbas’ Palestinian Authority have once again missed an opportunity to showthat things are changing and moving toward reconciliation and dialogue by showing respect for other faiths and religions," said Rabbis Marvin Hier and Abraham Cooper, dean and founder andassociate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

"The destruction of sacred sites in Gaza proves that the Palestinian Authority must never be entrusted with any Jewish orChristian Holy sites," Hier and Cooper continued.

"Anywhere else in the civilized world when a house of worship is destroyed such an act is labeled and treated as a hatecrime," they added.

Simon Wiesenthal Center officials pointed to the Israeli town of Shfaram where all of the 25,000 residents are Arab as aliving example of religious tolerance: Shfaram’s historic synagogue, long empty and without Torah scrolls and prayer books, is still treated by its Christian, Muslim, and Druze neighborsas a sacred communal trust. To this day, the keys to the former house of worship are held, by a local Muslim housewife.

In addition, town elders tend to the 2,000 year-old grave of Rabbi Yehuda Ben Bava, known as one of the "Ten Martyrs"killed by the Roman Empire.

"Shfaram reflects age-old traditions in the region that are now being by torched by the likes of Hamas and otherIslamists," Wiesenthal Center officials concluded.

La quema de sinagogas indica que Abbas pierde una oportunidad de demostrarrespeto y tolerancia por otro credo

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal condenó la quema, por parte de palestinos, de las sinagogas que quedaron en Gaza, luego de laretirada israelí.

"Al descuidar estos lugares sagrados, el presidente de la Autoridad Nacional Palestina Mahmoud Abbas perdió nuevamente laoportunidad de mostrar que las cosas se estarían encaminando hacia la reconciliación, el diálogo y el respeto" dijeron los rabinos Marvin Hier (Decano y Fundador del Centro SimonWiesenthal) y Abraham Cooper (Decano Adjunto).

"La destrucción de los templos en Gaza muestra que la Autoridad Nacional Palestina no está preparada para custodiar lossitios religiosos judíos o cristianos. Un acto de estas características, la destrucción de una casa de oración, en cualquier otro lugar del mundo sería catalogado como un crimen inspiradopor el odio" agregaron.

Los dirigentes del Centro Simon Wiesenthal destacaron como ejemplo de tolerancia religiosa a la ciudad israelí de Shfaram,cuyos 25.000 habitantes son en su totalidad árabes. Su histórica sinagoga, inactiva hace tiempo y sin sus rollos de la Torah y libros de rezos, es todavía considerada por sus vecinoscristianos, musulmanes y druzos como un bien comunal sagrado. Hasta el día de hoy, las llaves del edificio están bajo el cuidado de una ama de casa musulmana. Además, los ancianos de laciudad se encargan del cuidado de la tumba del Rabbi Yehuda Ben Bava, conocido como uno de los "diez mártires" muertos por el imperio romano. Esta tumba tiene más de 2000 años.

"Shfaram es un reflejo de viejas tradiciones de tolerancia bien establecidas en la región, que están ahora siendoincendiadas por el Hamas y otros extremistas" concluyeron Hier y Cooper.
