While British University Trade Union Calls for Boycott of Israeli Academics, London School of Economics Students' UnionElects the Late Simon Wiesenthal as its 2006 Honorary President

British academia is in turmoil as the National Association of Teachers in Further and Higher Education (NATFHE) calls forboycott of their Israeli peers and lauds the election of Hamas. Their opponents point to the violation of NATFHE's constitutional obligation to oppose other forms of discrimination "whether onthe grounds of sex, race, religion, colour, class or NATIONAL origin."

In the context of this debate, an important symbolic step for tolerance was taken in the election of the late Simon Wiesenthal as the 2006 Honorary President of the London School of Economics andPolitical Science (LSE) Students' Union.

Electees have always been chosen from deceased personalities and a former Honorary President was Sir Winston Churchill, whilethis year's candidates had also included the late Edward Said.

In a letter to Student Union General Secretary, Rishi Madlani, the Centre's Director for International Relations, Dr. ShimonSamuels, noted "as a graduate of the London School of Economics, I feel especially thrilled to confirm our participation at the commemoration event that your Union has planned for thisOctober.

Samuels added, "The LSE Students' Union, by electing Simon Wiesenthal as its Honorary President, has stressed the values oftolerance, justice and peace fostered by this icon of human rights", and recalled that "Simon was happiest when debating with students, viewing them as the protagonists in containing futuregenocides."

Samuels concluded with the wish that "Your Students' Union may serve as an admirable model by setting a challenge to LSE, in its'Wiesenthal Year', to become the first hate-free campus."

Alors que le syndicat des universités britanniques appelle à un boycott des universitaires israéliens, l'Union desétudiants de la London School of Economics choisit feu Simon Wiesenthal comme président honoraire pour 2006.

L'Université britannique est en ébullition, alors que l'Association nationale des enseignants pour l'éducation supérieure etavancée (NATFHE) appelle au boycott de ses homologues israéliens et se félicite de l'élection du Hamas. Leurs opposants soulignent les violations des obligations statutaires de la NATFHE enmatière d'opposition à toutes formes de discriminations " fondées sur le sexe, la religion, la couleur, la classe sociale ou l'origine NATIONALE ".

Dans ce contexte, l'élection de feu Simon Wiesenthal comme Président honoraire pour 2006 de l'Union des étudiants de la LondonSchool of Economics and Political Science (LSE) revêt une forme particulièrement symbolique.

Les élus ont toujours été choisis parmi des personnalités défuntes, l'un des présidents honoraires passés fut Sir WinstonChurchill ; et cette année l'un des candidats était feu Edouard Said.

Dans une lettre au secrétaire général de l'Union des étudiants, M. Rishi Madlani, le directeur du Centre Wiesenthal pour lesrelations internationales, M. Shimon Samuels, a fait remarquer " qu'en tant que diplômé de la London School of Economics, [il] se sentait particulièrement ému de confirmer [sa] participation à lacommémoration prévue par l'Union des étudiants en octobre prochain.

M. Samuels a ajouté : " En choisissant Simon Wiesenthal comme président honoraire, l'Union des étudiants de la LondonSchool of Economics a mis l'accent sur les valeurs de tolérance, justice et paix que ce symbole des droits de l'homme représentait " et il a rappelé que " Simon Wiesenthal appréciait toutparticulièrement les débats avec les étudiants, en qui il voyait les protagonistes qui empêcheraient les futurs génocides ".

M. Samuels a conclu par le vœu que " (votre] Union d'étudiants serve de modèle remarquable en faisant de la London School ofEconomics le premier campus débarrassé de la haine, en cette " année Wiesenthal ".
