Porto Alegre, Brasil, The World Social Forum (WSF), established in 2001 as a radical counterpoint to the Davos World Economic Forum, is an annual gathering ofanti-globalization NGOs and militants from numerous and wildly diverse social causes. Over the years, the WSF and its regional satellites have been hijacked by the Palestine cause, whilesmothering attention to all other grievances.
As the only Zionist Jewish organization present, the Simon Wiesenthal Center representatives, Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director forInternational Relations) and Sergio Widder (Director for Latin America), focused attention on the planning sessions for BDS; judicial measures in preparation against individual Israelisfor ‘crimes against humanity’; religious campaigns to undermine Christian friends of Israel and renewed projects for flotillas to penetrate Israeli maritime waters. •Consultant to the Palestinian Legal NGO, Al Haq, Nasser al Rayyes: “All Israeli factory products and all academics must beboycotted”. •Housing and Land Network militant, Joseph Schechla: “We should campaign for a removal of tax benefits on money raised by the JewishNational Fund, which is used for dispossession.” •Advisor for Samidoun – Palestinian Prisoners Network, Charlotte Kates: “Israel, like Canada, is a country based on dispossession ofindigenous and native peoples, like the United States, Australia and Brazil… We need to fight in the streets in order to win in the Court rooms… We have to promote prosecution of Israelisin Courts all over the world… The International Association of Democratic Lawyers is collecting evidence in Gaza for potential trials.” •The YMCA – YWCA Joint Advocacy Institute Director and Director of Defend the Children International, Rifaat Kassis, on the KairosDocument (Greek for “this is the time”):”Kairos is a tool, which we now use to meet with Ministers of Education and Higher Education to discuss programs on inter-religious dialogue… TheBethlehem coordination office this Christmas has material for each advent Sunday: land, water, wall. We have groups in the United Kingdom and last month the inauguration in Ireland wasattended by the Prime Minister… The Indian Council of Churches represents us in Asia and our European caucus is based in Germany. We are now beginning in the United States and LatinAmerica to expand a movement to explain the Palestinian character of Bethlehem among all churches.” •“The WSF has become the vehicle for the perpetuation of the 2001 anti-Semitic Durban agenda, demonizing and delegitimizing the JewishState, and, by association, fomenting assaults on Jewish communities worldwide. Its grassroots constituency has a disproportionate impact on public opinion and international institutions, especially the United Nations system,” added Widder. The Simon Wiesenthal Center is one of the largest international Jewish human rights organizations with over 400,000 member families in the United States. It is an NGO at internationalagencies including the United Nations, UNESCO, the OSCE, the OAS, the Council of Europe and the Latin American Parliament (PARLATINO).
